It's four-engined, but that's all I can tell.

Now don't jump to conclusions: it could be two F-4s, two F-15s, two F-18s, two Tornados, two Typhoons, four Hawks or two Lightnings flying on their sides...... ;D

I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

Seriously, it'd likely be a 747-400, they make that characteristic '4 into 2' contrail.

For some reason A-340s don't, they leave four contrails getting steadily fainter. I've not seen an A-380 at altitude yet so far, although their huge wing chord doesn't seem to be present in that pic.

Kit, it's a military transport  A McDonnell Douglas transport... ;D

A C-17 then? I'll have to add that to my list of '4 into 2' contrails then, something to do with the winglets perhaps.

Over here today, flying in and out of the low cloudbase, has been one of the RAF/Army special ops all grey Islanders, the ones with all the lumps and bumps as featured in a recent IPMS UK mag. It's gone up the River Severn twice and down once, and you can hardly hear it until it's almost overhead, so quiet are the 3 bladed props on that version.

Wonder what it's looking, or listening, for around here?

Directly overhead this afternoon came this rarity below, and it was a LONG way up, only just in range of my 150 mm lens.

It's an Aerostar 500, or a Piper PA-60 in current guize. There are only two on the UK register.
