And I would be forced to agree with the lad.  Boeing, good; Airbus, wannabe's :)

The 787 is just a peek at what's to come from Boeing.  They're already working furiously behind the scenes on a 737 replacement (or replacements - they may be ready to give Air-doo and Jungle Jet a run for their money in the 50-150 seat market).

The A380 may prove to be Airbus' undoing.  Their current (publicly admitted) break even point is now up to 470 airplanes.  They've sold 163.  The airplane is never going to be wildly popular, since it was made for a very specific, narrowly tailored market.  Nobody in North America or South America will ever buy one very likely, and those airlines that do buy them aren't going to buy dozens and dozens.  I seriously doubt Airbus will ever come remotely close to breaking even, and they've sunk a LOT of Euros into that beast already.

Meantime, the 787 already has nearly 700 firm orders before it's even flown, with no end in sight, and the very real possibility of spawning the replacement for the 737 (deliveries nearing 7000) and thus for the 757.  I'd bet the 787 will be in production when I'm dead and gone.

There's a hilarious video on You-Tube from Boeing showing "Airbus" guys working on the A350 design.  Talk about your wannabe, "me-too" designs!

If it's not Boeing, I'll take a cab, thanks :)

ok, ceasefire time. i just don't think boeing should always have it its own way all
the time and neither should airbus.

btw, jennings, the KC-135 that thorvic gave me for rebuild to a HP111C comes
with instructions that have your name in the credits. did you help AMT/Ertl out on
this kit?

Yeah ceasefire, otherwise I'll be rude with Boeing

Say what you want to say, Boeing  behind airbus or Airbus behind Boeing, this is just BLUFF.

I've said it before and I say it again, If you only have two airliners builders, they are set to live TOGETHER, because airlines would never accept a monopoly.

60-40, 40-60, or 50-50... market won't change a lot until someone (China? Russia ? Canada ? Brazil?) manage to break Airbus-Boeing duo.

So I won't start a polemic on the subject
King Arthur: Can we come up and have a look?
French Soldier: Of course not. You're English types.
King Arthur: What are you then?
French Soldier: I'm French. Why do you think I have this outrageous accent, you silly king?

Well regardless I would rather take my chance out there on the ocean, that to stay here and die on this poo-hole island spending the rest of my life talking to a gosh darn VOLLEYBALL.

Thanks for your efforts to "keep the peace" gentlemen. I've got to agree that the airlines will always ensure there are at least two major aircraft producers in business to keep competition alive.

A cool what-if idea would be what if some of those airline producers from decades ago went back into business and re-vamped their old product lines? Perhaps we could see a modernized L-1011 done with more streamlining, smaller yet better engines and composite materials? If I had some airliner kits in the stash and some liveries, I'd be whiffing them to no end!

I suppose Embraer, Bombardier, and some chinese manufacturers will soon be able to change this, albeit, not for the widebody market ;) (Embraer already killed the 736 and 318)

Besides that, A.net already has photos of it:

Well, just another tin cigar tube to me!  I've got to admit, I find it hard to identify airliners, they all look very alike to me.  I can't say I was surpised when it didn't turn out like the early Dreamliner concepts.  When someone comes up with a kit, I might try & 'back-engineer' it!

Mmmm, sharkfins......
I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

Yeah I was bummed they didn't keep the shark fins too! The bird doesn't look a whole lot different to me than their current 767.

"Back engineering" is cool Mossie! Can you picture that shark-finned beauty in BEA livery?

They don't look any more alike than Rafales, Typhoons, and Gripens do.  Similar design criteria call for similar designs.  And btw, the 787 isn't tin.  It's composite :)

The 787 is probably the most elegant looking airplane to come along since the 707.  Airbus, be scared.  Be very scared :)

They used my original drawings as a basis (and still managed to screw up the fuselage length).  They did *not* however, heed my advice on how to do the cockpit windows, hence the really FUBAR method their designer chose.  Had they done it the way I suggested, it would have a) fit correctly, and B) looked like a KC-135 windscreen.

Plastic cigar tube this time around. ;)

The 'shark-fin' vertical tail was lost because the fluid dynamics work predicted and the wind tunnel proved that it was actually draggier than a more conventional design. The original nose design had visibility problems that the customer pilots didn't like. So it goes.

Bri, hmm, I'm trying to think what a present day BEA livery might look like, more swishy & less in your face I guess!

Jennings you forgot the J-10!  I'm not a huge fan of modern fighters either, all the Euro-canards look similar to each other, along with the F-22 & F-35 (although a common manufacturer helps there).  I'm not convinced about the 787 being that elegant, okay, it's got better looks than it's predecessors but it's only tweaks, it still looks like the 767 & A320!

Jon, yeah, I remember hearing somewhere that airliner aerodynamics were about as advanced as current technology could take them & basically the tweaks I mentioned above are all that's going to happen in the near future.  It's a shame from a purely asthetic point of view, but aircraft are not built to look pretty!  At least in our world we can take them & mould them to fit in with our 'ideal' world!
