Does anyone know anything about the Saab J21B?  It was apparently a planned version with a Griffon or DB-605 in place of the DB-601, had a bubble canopy & 'improved aerodynamics', but was superseeded by the jet powered J21R.  The information here is about all I can find, does anybody know anymore or have any pics?

Cheers!

Simon.
I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

"In 1941 the air force arranged for purchase and licence production of Daimler Benz DB 601 engines, and Saab was told to expect to use DB 601 and DB 603 engines for future projects."

"In 1943 71 DB 605B engines of 1475 hp were purchased at the same time a licence production contract was signed. The first engine made in Sweden wasn't delivered until after the war and production continued until 1948."

"An improved version, J 21B was envisioned in 1945. It was to have three 20 mm cannons in the nose, a radar in the starboard boom and better aerodynamics. It was to use the same engine or possibly a DB605E. There has also been references to a envisioned variant with a RR Griffon engine. But of course it was really time for jet engines by then."

Thanks Mick, I didn't know about the radar in the boom!

"Improved aerodynamics" could mean anything, although there were changes to the wing from the J21 to the J21R jet.  I guess I could use a wing from the J21R, with a slimmed down fuselage, maybe a cockpit arrangement similar to the DH Vampire, i.e. almost in the nose?

This is the kind of arrangement I had in mind, this is a visualisation of the SNCASO SO.8010 posted by Jemiba on the Secret Projects forum.  Ignore the jet (obviously!) & the cranked wing, shorten the fuselage accordingly & I think it may have looked something like this.  Saying that, the cockpit may have remained in the same position as the J21A, no way of knowing without more detailed source material.
