There was a technothriller novel that came out, 'bout 1975 or so, that had a US nuclear-powered derigible aircraft carrier (two turbofans, one big turborprop (used helicopter rotors as blades)) carrying Harriers and Cobras.  As I remember, it faced off against a Moskva-class Soviet carrier flying developed Yak-36s.

The sketches were done by hand and scanned in, so need some "interpretation".  Now that I have some free time, I'm over-drawing them with my graphics tablet to flesh out some of the details and colour schemes

A German parasol-wing fighter:

In-line engine, small lower wings support the undercarriage (like the modern Dorner Do 28).  Note that the First World War does not take place here.   I have several different ideas, including:

> Larger Soviet - Imperial Russian civil war in the early 1920s, with the Imperials supported by the British and the Germans quietly trying to play both sides off against one another, for fear of a united Russia.

> Defeat of Communism in Russia, with many Soviets escaping to South America?  And what would the USA (essentially isolationalist, due to no First World War) think of a Soviet South America?

> Minor conflicts between the European powers (Italy Vs Austria?)

> "The Tsars Revenge" against the Germans?  (What about the Poles?)

> "The Yellow Peril" - basically nicked from "The War in the Air".  With the Russians distracted with the Germans, an inland Chinese empire "liberates" Eastern Russia?

How about using SkyHook for a modern version? Then go with Harriers or something like that.

I always liked kicking the idea of large airships in the 1930's for things like commerce raiding. Something big enough you could put an early radar, and carry a useful number of aircraft.

Cool B)

That sort of design also reminds me of Last Exile

I have the series on DVD.  The Claimh-Solais may just have provided a little bit of inspiration....   ;)

Evan, I remember the novel (having read it), though cannot remember the title.

One could use Cavorite to lighten the ship. Or Upsidasium.
