Bf-110t Idea

Hi folks,

Decided to initate a new thread so as not to hijack Bluntie's thread (here) anymore than I have already.

Over there, I mentioned the idea of a carrier based Bf-110 (the Bf-110T).  I see this as being plausible given the status the Zerstörer units had early on in the war.  The greater range would also be useful to a carrier airwing.

I was thinking that it would be a multi-role bird combining the roles of heavy fighter, recon and torpedo bomber.  I would probably modify a BF-110C/D for the role and have it circa 1940/41 (before the Bf-110's reputation took a pounding in the BoB)  - folding wings, single torpedo, naval scheme - what else?  Suggestions welcomed.

As to a backstory, I figue it could start of as the Bf-110T-1, be slightly upgraded into the T-2, then around 1942 be upgraded again into the Bf-110T-4 (the T-3 being a purpose built carrier trainer) along the lines of the Bf-110G series with DB 605 engines (this following the failure of the Me-210T) and then eventually replaced by the Me-410T in late 1943.  Around a single staffel of around 12 - 14 machines would be carried by the carrier along with Bf-109Ts.

Thoughts, suggestions?

Regards,

Greg

A hook would be good  :P

But seriously, I think the 110 could have a worthwhile career aboard a carrier as opposed to the shellacking it took as a Zerstorer.  It's definitely a contender for a multi-role ship with it's load carrying & comparitively heavy armament.

Hooks are for wimps - real men just slam on the brakes  :D .

Don't worry, I hadn't forgotten the arrestor hook - though I will try to dig up references for the Bf-109T so as to try to do something similar.  Same goes for catapault arrangement.

that's another Bf-110 to build.
The other is Japanese.... ;)

Before adding the tailhook you will need to change the location of the tailwheel by moving it forward one frame.

Heavens to mercy!  I have a spare 110 that I wasn't sure what to do with until I read this thread...folding wings?  Fantastico.

More powerful engines??

Im sure it would have greater succes, flying off a pocket aircraft carrier (escorted by the graf spee), mercilesly hunting down unarmed merchant ships, and defending its motherships against aerial attack from british bombers, and from RN cruisers

the biggest problem will be with the air coolers under the wings...I planned to build one from an existing partially build kit but this problem stopped the project....
you need to replace the coolers to another area but they are not small...
not insubstantial part of the wing should be folded and without any conversion of the air intakes is the folding line not really plausible...
my idea was to to replace the air intakes in the wings leading edge but its not easy and very time consumpting...maybe in the next time  ;)
best regards
as with torpedo....the place between the landing struts is wide enough for a weapon like the Friedensengel

Substitute the DB601's for radials?
I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

If the kit is to be posed with the wings unfolded, a slight extension in span would be helpful for some visual differentiation from factory stock.

Neat idea!

I will investigate further and see what I can come up with - maybe annular coolers like on the Fw-190D-9 and some Jumo powered Ju-88s?

I do have a plan to also do a BMW 801 radial powered Bf-110 - maybe they could be combined, though I do like the idea of a DB 601 powered carrier version.

A Bf110T of the Japanese Navy?    Give their carrier inventory some beef.

Whatever.
