The Japanese have a 6 digit system for their serials which goes as following

1st digit - Year of manufacture, so 9 could be 1989, 1999, 2009 etc

2nd digit - Aircraft type; 6 is T-4, F-104 and T-7. 1 is T-33,  7 is F-4, 2 is F-15 etc

3rd digit - Aircraft role; 5 is trainer, 8 is fighter etc

4,5,6 digits - Aircraft serial number

If you look at a few pictures of JASDF aircraft you should be able to figure out a suitable serial number for your entry.

Thanks for the info Nev! I'm going to pin this one for other floks to see :)

For m F-8 I'm using serials from an F-4: 57-8364 which looks to be right.

I asked myself a question: the second digit is used for very different aircrafts (for example, the "2" is used for interceptors, trainers, helicopters, SAR planes and even utilitary planes!!

My question is: if we chose to introduce a new plane in the JASDF (in my case Typhoon and Harrier), can we chose the number we want or is there any rule behind this second digit?

I think it's "number of last aircraft to enter service +1", but I could be wrong!

Or you could just swap the number type for type eg Typhoon instead of F-2, Typhoon gets F-2s number.
