I have made some changes in this Academy YF-16 to give birth to this lightly downgraded version of F-16, intended to ground attack role:

No interception radar
PW 1120 powered
bigger wings to allow 2 additional hardpoints

Now the problem of the gun. I am thinking in Oerlikon KCA (the gun of Jaktviggen JA-37):

Installation in same position as original Vulcan looks OK to me, but I think that I should add a bulk, like a cft.

Having only one gun in one side, will it be unbalanced? perhaps no more than F-16?

Please, your comments

Interesting - is the nose going to accommodate an optical or laser device for operating PGMs?

Also, if this is in a cold war context, this might be a good anti-helicopter platform, with an IRST and ASRAAM.

A-10 gun in a centerline Drop Tank?

Thanks.

Try a 25mm or 27mm weapon as oppose to a 30mm gun, the side effects wouldnt be as hazardous. ;)

One idea I've been toying with for a long-planned modern COIN Mustang is cannon pods in the wings like the installation on the Do335 (Model and pics on ARC by Timothy Barnhart).

Take a couple of appropriate drop tanks and cut a horizontal slit so they slide onto the leading edge of the wing, maybe around 1/3 span.  Fair them in with putty/milliput/gum/your filler of choice.  The tanks make for larger pods than the Dornier, and allow for more ammo storage.  Add a spiffy cannon barrel of appropriate calibre and bingo you have a pair of guns for strafing all and sundry.

I think this setup would work on an A-16.  It allows two guns without taking up any internal space, allowing the area currently occupied by the M61 to be used for fuel, avionics, or even a toilet (for 777  ;)  ), and there are no issues with gas ingestion.  The lengthened wingspan also helps compensate for the loss of lift.
So I got that going for me...which is nice....

Hear is a  daft idea, but why not two guns one on each side?

Personally, i would think that wingtip maverics would make it cool! And a toilet of course :P

I've got to vote for the cannon pods! Surely very heavy guns are a necessity for a serious attack aircraft!

The conversion work you have done so far is really impeccable! Are you going to do a US version? Without radar and with enhanced ground-attack capabilities it could very well have become a "new F-5" which gets exported to less reliable allies.  :f16:
