Actually, using the CFTs as part of an internal gun system would be a right pain given that they're over fuel tankage and not the ammo bay.  I could see them as self-contained gun pods, similar to the Aden pods on the first-generation Harrier, but you'd have fun beefing up the structure to take the gun loads (those are not trivial - dealing wtih them now on the F-35A design).

I do like the idea of permanently mounting the equivalent of a GEPOD 30 (essentially a GAU-8 in a pod with reduced ammo storage) on an A-16, though I'm not sure what other changes would be required.

As far as guns are concerned, I can't see how you could go wrong with the KCA. It *has* been very successfully aircraft-mounted (JA-37 Viggen); it uses the same cartridge as the GAU-8 which gives it excellent armor penetration; and while the gun is a couple of feet longer than the 20 mm Vulcsn, it's no more than 19 kg heavier excluding ammo. Tailor the rate of fire to match the throw weight of the M61, and the centerline offset won't mean a thing, AFAICT.

If you want to do some radical up-gunning, I have an idea for you - chop the muzzle compensator off a Revell PzH 2000 and use it to replace the muzzle shroud on the Italeri A-10... (not doing that with my PzH, it looks too gorgeous at the moment to deface it like that.) A 155 mm semi-automatic blowback-operated cannon with a drum mag should fit into the space used by the GAU-8, and even with a shorter barrel and a very small charge, I think there are few things that'd survive direct fire of that magnitude...

Wow, I missed this thread (I musta been sleepin' at the keyboard again!). Looks really good so far Carlos! I think going with your original idea of using the KCA as armament is a great choice. you could always do varients farther down the road if you wanted to try other options

I really like the downgraded F-16 idea.
