Bah! If you really want to make some speed, find yourself an X-15!

:D
In want of hobby space!  The kitchen table is never stable.  Still managing to get some building done.

I watched something about them on TV a few months ago, they didn't really seem to be on the ball to me.  Now the guy who drives the Spirit of America, he knows what he's doing and so do the bunch from the UK

Poor starfighter  :(  They chopped off its wings, thats more humiliating than making it into a racing plane :(  ;) And the driver has gone missing in the desert :(

Steve Fossett isn't that team's driver, if he was they'd be a hell of a lot further along. Fossett is megabucks, the NAE folks are nickel and dime.

BTW what's humiliating about an aircraft being a racer? A far better fate than being turned into cookware.

You could say Breedlove knew what he was doing as he held the record five times. Breedlove sold the Spirit of America car to Fossett and it has been extensively modified for the planned run at 800 mph.

I've seen this beastie. It's really cool looking but you would think they would make the wheel struts a bit more aerodynamic. Big ol' square struts. It just doens't look right. They look more like the tow dolly than part of the vehicle. Oh well. Not my $$.

Ok,
F-104 is already real so what other contenders can we come up with.

X-15 was already mentioned.
How about:
EE Lightning
Mig-21
Mirage III

The car that Andy Green drove was powered by two Phantom Speys, but IIRC the outfit that built it found that they couldn't use a regular aircraft frame because of the effect of the shock wave bouncing of the ground and coming back at the body.

Mind you a similar car powered by two Lightning engines would definitely be neat.

You missed Dakota off your list Phil.

THRUST DC-3!

I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

Mossie,
I was thinking more the jet engine approach but this one definitely fits the topic.

How about a car powered by one Lightning engine?

"Inconceivable!"

"You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."
