just curious..whats the form with 'unofficial group builds', just wondering as like a few on here iv some ongoing interests not usually catered for by the ones voted in? having said that iv always managed to build an entry for the 'official' ones even tho iv never posted them up in time for the competition proper, gives me the inspiration anyway i guess!
cheers, Joe

Hi guys,
philp and I discussed the notion of an 'unofficial' build a while back and now that its moving into fall here in the northern latitudes,
I'm wanting to get going on my version of an EE Lightning LSR machine.

So how about 1 October, 2008 to 1 April, 2009?
Six full months of construction time with final reveals on the High Holy Day of Whiffendom;D

We could post in-progress material here, create a new thread in the projects area or perhaps the mods will see fit to
create a sub-forum area for unofficial builds?

Jon

p.s. philp I haven't forgotten about the artwork for logo decals.

May I post something in your GB?

BTW: Can Anachronistic GB have the same treatement? Please ...

OK, here is the info I got back from Jeff regarding "Unofficial GBs".

"If the next GB poll fails to get this project nominated you could just continue as an unofficial group build which could reside in the group build forum in the same location as The Handley Page Centinary theme build proposed by Trevor.  This is another unofficial group build that is active at the moment so I don't see why another unofficial group build can not keep it company in the same location."

Based on this we should start a new thread "Unofficial Design A Landspeed Record Challenger GB" and post pics there.  You could also post an "in progress" thread in another part of the forum.

So, any ideas for the "unofficial" rules for this?

And Jon, thanks for the upcoming artwork.  I have 3 names for my EE Lightning and not sure which one to use:
White Lightning
Chain Lightning
Quite Frightening

Don't forget the rule about wheels! That is if you decided to keep it....

I'll shut up now.

Best of luck getting this GB off the ground!

I'm currently trying to get some of these:

I have tentative Whiff plans for all of them, most of which are NOT cars, however, I fancy the red one (with the heavily-framed cockpit) as a steam-powered Steampunk Land-Speed-Record car . Copper bodywork with lots of rivets, and two smokestacks with filigree cones on the top, like Stephenson's Rocket, and maybe scaleorama'd to 1/48th. Could, in fact, be called Stephenson's Comet or some such.....

Any ideas for other steamy details? (ooh, er, missus!) ;D

The kits are labled 1/32nd which makes them perfect for Car Wars type vehicles with 1/35th scale weapons.

Couple of these are available in my local LHS if you are interested.

Am I correct in assuming you're in the USA? If so, then then your LHS isn't very local to me: I'm in the UK and the postage would cost more than the kit! Anyway, there are several batches of them on UK ebay, so I'll go for those. Thanks for the kind offer, though.

Somehow a LSR Aerosan seems just so right.   There's gotta be room for a LSR winter course north of Winnepeg or Regina, Sask.

Would a vehicle intended to get a specialized record be acceptable?

I mean: the fastest milk van in the world, the fastest AFV, the fastest bowser, ...

Speed records are rather specialised anyway, so I don't see why not.

Now I am looking forward to the Worlds Fastest Milk Van.
