QuoteSo, Ralleymodeller, is that the 1/72nd S-tank or the 1/35th you're building a whole army of?

I've got 3 x 1/35th to have a go at, but will add more either at Duxford (August 7th) or via online purchases.

There's so many GREAT ideas!!

1/35th. They have them in 1/72? Cool!

what's really spooky is that this bloke has missed off 2 parts, just like I did on my Chilean one, I only noticed when I was clearing out the sprues from the box (the instructions are a bit over complicated), note there should be another collar between the first one and the fume extractor on the main gun, and there's another piece he's missed on the glacis (not visible in this pic), very strange, at least I'm not a complete dullard...

oh, the Swedes were going to update their S-Tanks with 120mm guns but then the Cold War ended

Hey everybody. I was just cleaning out some old kits from my stash, and I found an old, motorized, Academy 1/48 S-tank. It was missing a few road wheels, and I started thinking of how I could upgrade it. I want to make it into more of an all-purpose tank, instead of just a tank destroyer. I want to lengthen it by about two road wheels, which about the leveled off middle section of the hull. Also, I would like to make it front-engined. That gives the advantage of bolstering the front armor somewhat, and it also creates a void in the back for a troop compartment. I think it should also have a better gun. I'm not sure what kind, but definitely something different. Also possibly some reactive armor or RPG fences just because they look cool. I'm open to any ideas or suggestions. Profiles are also welcomes. Thanks all.

How about a variant with the 105mm gun replaced with a pair of say 30mm cannon for anti-aircraft work (maybe with a radar etc.) or maybe a variant with a pedestal-mounted gun (like the Swedes did experiment with) or maybe a version with a small turret (say off a Scorpion light tank or similar)?

.....or an urban combat armored vehicle, á la BMP-T, with a small turret, but in front, slightly behind your new engine location, with a coupla 30mm, 7,62 MG and four missiles. You'd still have space in the rear for 4-6 soldiers

Well, the problem with putting the engine in the front is that in its basic version, the gun came out from the front of the body. That was the whole point,no turret so it would make a smaller profile to enemy tanks. So,in order to move the engine to the front, you'd have to have a turret of some sort. You could do what the Germans did with their Jaguar 2 tank destroyers, replacing the front mounted gun with an ATGM system mounted on the roof. The Germans used both the HOT and later the TOW.Since the Sweds already had the TOW system for their Bo-105s,this would be the natural choice.

If you lose the main gun up front and move your engine and transmission to that location, you have an opportunity to maybe create some kind of missile launching vehicle with a small turret fitted with a pair of launch tubes for the HOT, TOW, or Milan missiles.

Another option is to fit some kind of elevation mechanism that would raise the missiles up above the vehicle on an arm similar to what is used by the utility companies for working on power lines, this could then be raised above the vehicle while it is in defilade to engage targets or perform surveillance missions.

You would still have the area in the rear of the vehicle for use of personnel or to carry additional missiles.

Perhaps instead of missile armament, you could go with an elevated gun system, something in the 25mm to 35mm range for use by your reconnaissance vehicle while performing scouting missions.

Similar to that which was proposed for the Panther Anti-Tank/Anti-Helicopter vehicle:

or as recently (at DSEi 2207) shown on this Czech Recon vehicle:

Good idea!

The Bundeswehr also used this type of mechanism for a tactical air defense surveillance radar called "Giraffe" a few years back.  I remember being out on a field training exercise in Germany one year and had the good fortune to see the Giraffe in operation.  The only thing you could see was the rotating antenna above the tree line a few kilometers from my location.  I was quite impressed at what little there was to see of the equipment save for the antenna.  A great idea indeed and one that has for some unforseen reason been ignored by most countries as a viable option for a weapons system.

I just started thinking about this again. What if you replaced the main gun with something like a GAU-8 Avenger or something similar, but left everything else the same? I could see it being effective for street-type fighting like what's going on in Iraq. It would also probably need significant aromor upgrades. Chobham maybe? Anyway, I'm really getting back into an armor/military mode so I want to keep this going.

QuoteChobham maybe?

Or Reactive armour tiles - more visually appealing maybe?

Same as the Saladin, always a fav of mine. Its design seemed so futuristic. Anything besides just a tank?

I have a 1/72nd one in the stash, the idea being to re-arm it with a 152mm Shillelegh gun/launcher, an M-60 cupola and loads of ERA, the result being a USMC assault gun having it's last hoorah in Fallujah....
