Here's my first whiff in a long, long while.  This is precisely what you should NOT do to a $70 Hasegawa shake-n-bake kit. . .  The scheme is a digital naval night scheme (totally made-up).  I hadn't installed any armaments mainly due to laziness, and the desire to finish the thing after several weeks on my bench.

The digital camo was actually not very difficult at all.  All you need is some masking tape, and a sheet of the "sidewalk" styrene that's laid out in a grid.  There are various sizes of the sidewalk--I used the finest I could find, with 1/16" squares (I believe. . .).  Tamiya tape gave me the best results.  I started with regular masking tape, but it just wasn't as friendly.

First, spray a good base coat (in this case gray sandable primer).

On the side, place a strip of tape along one of the lines on the sidewalk styrene.  Then you use a knife to cut the tape into squares and rectangles of varying size.  The grid makes this entirely too easy.

Lay down the rectangles in a pattern, then spray your second color.  I worked from darkest color to lightest color.

Leaving the first round of tape on, place a second round of tape rectangles to compliment the ones that are already there.  Take care to tuck in the edges of the tape if the shapes overlap one another (to prevent bleeding).  Then spray your second color.

The bottom kinda sucks.  I sprayed it with black india ink, which wasn't too much fun.  I intended it to look weathered, but it just made it look like sloppy work in the end.

Peel the tape, and you're done.  Really, it isn't any tougher than any masked camo scheme, except it's a little more fiddly.

I think the real danger with a digital job like this is making it too fussy.  I'd like to do a few more, just to get the hang of it.  Maybe the PAK-FA will get a digital job. . .
