This white painted CASA B.270 gained world-wide fame due to its participation in "Operación Trinidad" realized at the 30th anniversary of Franco's victory in the civil war.  On April the first "Gordo" was dropped over Western Sahara followed by "Nño"two days later. It also dropped a crude thermonuclear-device which failed to detonate. The troops involved jokingly stated that the abbrevation CASA of the bomber actually meant "Cara al sol artificial" much to the delight of Franco... :dum:

Actually that idea isn't too stupid, the Ar-234 was designed with no landing gear and incorporating one was quite problematic. BTW Brian have you ever built a Ju-287?

Just a question, BdB, does the main gear on that one attach to the wing or is it cantilevered out from the fuselage.  This engineer's considered opinion is that cantilevered out from the fuselage makes a whole heaping helping of more sense.

In the early 70's an AWACS version of the CASA B.270 was developed, 6 were sold to Chile which kept them in service until 1992.

A B.270 of the Ejercito del Aire used to bomb rebels in the Western Sahara

When the Spaniards left equatorial Guinea they left behind one B.270 bomber which was taken over by the new Equatorial Guinean army. The aicraft was flown by Cuban pilots who dubbed the aicraft "Ilyushinito" alluding to the similarity to the heavier and bigger Il-28. The sole aircraft become presidents Nguema favorite toy buzzing his military parades and even getting named after him. In one of his virolent anti-Spanish speeches, many of which were caused by his excessive consumption of drugs he even threatened to incinerate Madrid using his "strategic bomber force". After killing a quarter of his population and incredible cruelties like crucifying his opponents he was overthrown in 1979. During the coup he desperately ordered the aicraft to bomb cities hold by the rebels but it didn't help much either. Nguema was shot and the aicraft blown up when the rebel troops of his nephew entered Malabo.
