QuoteCCG Becomes Military Branch

Ottawa- (CP) With many of it's missions already overlapping those of the CF, the Canadian Coast Guard has officially become a branch of the Armed Services.
Since it's transfer from the Ministry of Transport to the Ministry of Fisheries and Oceans in 1994, the cash-strapped and oft overlooked Coast Guard has been in trouble.
Forced to absorb the vessels of the Fisheries Dept., combined with a reduction in it's operating budget, many felt that the CCG was a sinking ship.
Today's news is great relief to some, while others are hesitant about joining the military family. The Coast Guard will continue with all of it's traditional roles, but following Tory promises will also expand to include Arctic Sovereignty and other military roles, such as armed reconnaissance and interdiction.
With RFPs set to be tabled next week, rumored to include new ships, aircraft, and the retrofitting of weapons to the existing fleet, many questions remain unanswered.
Interesting......

Alright!

It'll be interesting to see if they get any new ships, considering I saw an article not too long ago that the RCN was looking to scale back refits and new ship acquisitions.

In any case, new CG aircraft in any colors are always awesome!

The Rat

For most Canadians this is very much a "we'll believe it when we see it" scenario. Successive governments, both Liberal and Conservative, have talked a lot while doing nothing. Mulroney promised all sorts of stuff and delivered bugger all. Paul Martin increased defence spending to the highest level since WWII, but then lost an election and little came of it.

Quote...many questions remain unanswered.

Let's hope that they are answered properly.
