Forget Petain and  Vichy  regime (not too difficult) and imagine that on 16th june 1940 the french governement decided to keep on fighting, moving to Northern Africa. Of course what was left on the french armies after the german onslaught follow the move (no Mers-El-Kebir crisis for example).

A very different WWII follow, particularly in the mediterranean theater...

King Arthur: Can we come up and have a look?
French Soldier: Of course not. You're English types.
King Arthur: What are you then?
French Soldier: I'm French. Why do you think I have this outrageous accent, you silly king?

Well regardless I would rather take my chance out there on the ocean, that to stay here and die on this poo-hole island spending the rest of my life talking to a gosh darn VOLLEYBALL.

I would imagine that a lot of troops (maybe several divisions worth) may have been able to be evacuated from southern france before the Germans got there - although the Italians might have cut them off on land and blockaded the ports?

Certainly maintaining Malta as a thorn in the Axis side would have been a lot easier with most of N Africa in Allied hands.

The AdA use obsolete aircrafts in nearly suicide mission to slow down german invasion until early august.
This mean that evacuation start around 20th june and stop at the end of august.

There's no battle in Northern Africa nor in Lebanon/ Syria, and few air battles over Malta.
In fact all fighting concentrate around Greece, in three campaigns.

First campaign in october 1940 drive the italians out of the Dodecanese.
Then Germany attack yougoslavia and greece in spring 1941 but fail its conquest of Crete island.
Third, an amphibious landing of the allies  happen in February 1942 in Greece.

And there 's also very fierce fighting for Corsica and Sardaigne in spring 1941.
This mean that Barbarossa is postponed by a year, leaving Molotov improving the Red Army.
German offensive stop in a "kursk style" battle in Ukrania circa august 1942.

Well, writting actually stopped circa october 1942.

aparently WWII end in october 1944 in this scenario.

JoeP's quote from the "Char B1 Manufactured In Usa" thread:

QuoteHow about the Far East? Say the Vichy end up fighting in Indochina; the Royal Navy become reluctant to prevent them resupplying troops there after the events of Mers-el-Kebir, plus the presence of French forces distracts the Japanese, who want those territories but are unwilling to fight a "friendly" nation's forces. Maybe the RN even allows French naval units and transports to travel there (escorted by RN units, for their own safety, of course), getting them away from Nazi hands and adding a deterrent to Japanese attempts to offer "aid".

raises an interesting idea - the French fighting the Japanese in Indochina - Bloch MB.150s, Dewoitine D.520s and/or Morane-Saulnier M.S.406s against Nakajima Ki-43 Hayabusas and/or Mitsubishi A6M Zeros anyone?

This is a great site, the French version has many naval and aerial whiffs with armour thrown in too. Much food for thought here...

I must add this to my favorites!
