QuoteA Merlin P38 wouldn't look too different, because the radiators would probably be in the same place.
I wonder though what would the merlins would have done for the lightning's performance? Hmmmmm sounds like a question for our resident experts

QuoteThey did a Mosquito with beard radiators and found it was a crap idea.  At least one Mustang had a beard radiator.
Wasn't those beard rads on the Mosquito in addition to the main rads, something to do with the more powerful Merlin installed,

Was this the Bearded Mustang X you were thinking about, Merlin power with Spitfire prop:

Interestingly, when RR tested this installation against a Spitfire with the same engine/prop combination, the Mustang proved to be about 30 mph faster when the same settings were used.  Something which lead RR to believe that the Mustang was aerodynamically superior and consequently they decided to use the Mustang airframe/wings to use in their Private Venture Fighter which had a mid engine installation.

Not much, if anything.
Overall performance would have been pretty much the same.

QuoteImagine the french president getting a 747

Way too big for such a tiny man.
On the other hand I think a 747 will soon  be needed to carry his inflated Ego
King Arthur: Can we come up and have a look?
French Soldier: Of course not. You're English types.
King Arthur: What are you then?
French Soldier: I'm French. Why do you think I have this outrageous accent, you silly king?

Well regardless I would rather take my chance out there on the ocean, that to stay here and die on this poo-hole island spending the rest of my life talking to a gosh darn VOLLEYBALL.

QuoteIn fact, anything British in French markings or French in British markings!
With the description you are giving, this sounds like "Cross Dressing" instead of heresy....

or something on the flip side what would a P-38 look like with Merlins under the cowl???
"Panzer"

Probably like a Model 322.

I'd say a lot of matrixone's luft-whiffs count as heresy in many jmns' books.

Ooops, plan to build it.
Even worse, I plan to put Atar engines on it (evil laugh, muhahahahaha!!!)

btw there had been some Spitfires in french markings (not Vichy ones ). They were used for ground attack in Indochina circa 1947-1948.

There was also a single spitfire I that the French had brought from Supermarine for evaluation around 1939-40.
Ive no idea what happened to it once the panzers started rolling westwards thou.

Surely burned or chopped before the germans reached it. I bet this happened mid- june, lots of prototypes ended like this...

Radish

French Vichy Beaufighters

American-built Spitfires were the P-53 variants.
They were similar in appearance to UK-built examples, but structurally different with wet-wings, etc., having therefore a longer range.
The US Zwilling Spitfire was a development for long-range escort.
Why not a US-built (ie Allison engined) P-53 in RAF markings?

Jennings did a US 8th AF Lancaster profile.....very good too

And IJ built a super Meteor III in 9th AF markings

I've always thought a Mirage in UK markings would be fine....

Replace the Lightning with the Mirage IIIC, etc.....
Replace the Hunter with the Mirage IIIE, etc
Replace the V-bombers with the Mirage IV.

Later, add the Mirage F.1 and 2000 to the equation, with appropriate updates.

FANTASTIC
