When the UK reached an accomodation with Germany in 1939, her own industry was free to develop her existing aircraft. With a robust airframe and good handling, the Defiant was an obvious candidate for a single seat, ground attack aircraft - preferably with a damage-tolerant radial engine.. Westlands had spare production capacity and were close to Bristols. The Defiant V was developed with a Hercules engine: as the canopy line had to be raised to give the pilot an adequate view Westland adapted their Whirlwind cockpit to fit. With the Vickers 40mm canon a great tank buster and anti-shipping aircraft was created.

Reminds me of the Gloster F.5/34

and the Bristol Type 146.

BTW the Boulton-Paul P.96 series of projects, all based on an enlarged Defiant airframe, included a Centaurus powered variant, with and without a turret.

Glenn, you've done a great job in creating one ugly aircraft!  I like that, it makes it very real as not everything was pretty-pretty like the Spitfire or Hornet.

I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

Maverick

Nifty stuff Glenn, the SEAC cammies are just icing on the cake!

The Rat

YIKES! He's beating me to it!  :P  Had one on the bench a while ago but got sidetracked with other things. It'll be getting the Vokes filter off a tropical Spit (I'm retaining the Merlin), cannon pods off a Hurricane (looks like you used the same), and whatever bombs I can scrounge up. North African scheme.

Yours is certainly a good job, hat's off!

Why not send it in to ARC asap for Silly Week? Steve's said he needs more, time's getting close, it runs the first week of January.

Glenn, that's an absolute stunner! It looks so real I'm sure it will fool many so-called "experts".

Captain Canada

Wow, Glenn....what a beauty !

In the paper cutout, it sure looks like a Caproni. Then the finished product looks very Japanese......also P-47ish ! May just be the paint, tho. Which I love....the thing is just beauty !

Very convincing, especially in those colours, and surprising different from a standard Defiant - I'd certainly have had to look twice if I hadn't seen the build pictures
