Its not a wind up, its a genuine question!  Notts County is in the county of Nottinghamshire, Derby County is in the county of Derbyshire.  Stockport County is in the county of, er, Greater Manchester?  Lancashire?  Never heard of a Stockportershire.......

Apparently, it was established in 1883 as Heaton Norris Rovers, then the name was changed in 1890 to reflect the town gaining County Borough status. I suppose that means they should really have called it Stockport Borough, but Stockport County sounds better.....

And one more Quiz Night fact ..... Which of the 92 Premier and Football league teams grounds is closest to the River Mersey ? Catches a lot of people out answering Liverpool, Everton and Tranmere but it is .... Stockport County - though they may not be around for too long - a club in crisis.
