If doing a tigermeet bird, why not paint the whole tail fin yellow, and paint black uneaven stripes on it. It makes a nice result that is fairly easy to paint with a brush

Mossie

Yeah, but it's just not what I want to do.  As far as the bland paint scheme goes, I'm hoping to bring that out with the weathering, which after xperimenting seems as if it'll ben no harder to do then a camo scheme.  They way I intend to do it is to put a pale base coat on, then go over the panel lines with the actual camo colour.  Then I'll overcoat this with a thinned shade darker than the base coat, varying it in some places to give a patchy effect.  Seemed to work okay-ish on my Spit wing, although I think I'll be able to change it & I'll use Citadel acylics rather than Tamiya if poss.
I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

More progress.  Got the wings, tail & jet pipe on & I've started puttying.  You'll notice that I haven't put the intakes on, dozy bugger here forgot to pick up some of the most essential paints he needs! :banghead:  Not to worry, I should be able to get them tomorrow.  I mentioned a photo etch Avon nozzle, I'm probably going to ditch it as it's very fiddly, but I might give it another go.

Danish Tiger?.....yep that will work for me.
Tamiya acrylics?..swear by the stuff, but only for spraying,I had the devils own job when I tried brush painting. One tip that may be of help.: After the first coat ,brush over with Klear, dry, then second coat.
It does work. The blue and red were done that way on this old and now scrapped Mustang. (ten years ago!!)

Hope this helps.

Thanks again guys!  Dork, I think I'll give that a try if I can't get hold of any other acrylics that'll do the job.  I've been testing some of the green shades I've got & one of them particularly is horrible to paint, it seems that some individual colours are worse than others for some reason.

No pics, but I've got the PSR largely done, although I think there's a couple of spots that'll need some attention.  To be honest, it was getting me down despite it being pretty easy.  Sometimes I find PSR therapeutic, sometimes it's a chore, this time it was the latter.  I've got through it though, but I think my technique of clamping the fuse to buggery has come back to haunt me, the places that need extra attention are those that overlapped slightly before.  This was my own doing & I can't blame the kit, I'll review my clamping theory in future builds!

Mossie, if you're brush painting a metallic finish, and want to use acrylics then I heartily recommend the games workshop range.  They do 3 "NMF" shades - Mithril Silver, Chainmail and Boltgun Metal, all progressively darker.

Best metallic paints I've ever come across.  Don't forget to use a flat brush ;)

Thought I'd check in with a friendly request for a progress report, Mossie.
How's the Tiger coming along?

Thanks for the nudge Baz!  I've been making some progress, just haven't got around to posting.  I'll post some pictures this evening if I get a chance.  I've got a primer coat on & painted & masked some of the bare metal sections on the leading edges of the control surfaces.  I had a near disaster when I used Fairy Power Spray to remove the bodged Tamiya paint, more details later!

An update as promised!

After I last posted, I decided it wasn't worth battling against the Tamiya acrylics.  I happened to pass Monk Bar model shop in York on a work errand, it would have been rude not to pop in!  They had some Humbrol acrylics & these are much nicer to brush paint.  I thought I'd try Fairy Power Spray to remove it & this happened:

The Tamiya paint seemed to seperate into globdules, some of which stubournly remained adhered to the model in raised blobs.  I tried using some more Power Spray & leaving it longer, didn't budge it.  I used a tooth brush, this wouldn't remove it either.  I didn't want to resort to sanding down the whole model & losing the panel lines that where vital to the weathering I inteded to do, so I used a kitchen scouring pad.  It didn't remove it entirely, but it did reduce the blobs enough to allow them to be covered by primer.

I seemed to be having a bad day.  The lid on the Halfords grey primer rattle can was stuck.  I rapped it against a wall to knock it off, this succeeded in breaking the nozzle off with it, which leaked paint all over my hands.  Fortunately I had some white as well.  Then to cap it off, my weathering experiments were going badly, although I knew it was down to the Tamiya paints I was starting to loose heart. Several problems, but all could be overcome.  In the past, with this amount of setbacks I'd have stopped for a few days, maybe even weeks & possibly for good.  Sod that!

I cracked on & although it's taken me longer than expected, I've got to a point where I can get some paint on.  I primed the model & used Citadel Chainmail (Nev, you're right, the Citadel metallics are beautiful!) to paint the leading edges of the control surfaces, which I then masked.  I Kleared the canopy & masked it (I'm not good at this & it drives me crazy) but I still managed to get a superglue fingerprint on it which I probably won't be able get rid of without polishing it but I'm not that worried.  Tonight I should be able to get at least a part coat of Humbrol 80 from a rattle can that I'll use for the weathering base.

Right, time to crack on!

Yeah, Mossie!!!

That's the spirit!!!

Show the little plastic devil who's the boss!!!

And, by the way, nicely done, so far.

Pea green Tiger!  Got the base coat on last night, I was too knackered on Wednesday.  It won't look like this for long.  Trouble is, it's shown up a nasty gap in the canopy that didn't show too well before.  You can't see it in the pic, but believe it's there, now the paint is on it shines out like a light bulb.  Think I'm going to attempt to fill it before I go any further, then again, I might decide it doesn't bother me too much!

The operative phrase is "you can't see it in the pic."     Don't know about others here but my own builds have all sorts of similar flaws.  It's your fecking model, as the saying goes, but I'd say just motor on.  Keep this one simple, keep it enjoyable and, most importantly: get it done!  I admire the way you've persevered so far (man, do a lot of your trials on this build sound way too familiar!) and I think you're definitely proving yourself worthy of the satisfaction you're going to experience once this Tiger's on your shelf.  Good on ya!

Cheers Baz!  Too late, I already decided to do something about it!  To be honest, the only reason you can see it here is because it's a top view.  Had I taken a pic of the left side it would have been fairly obvious.  I just kept looking at it & thinking 'that's huge'.  I couldn't live with it, so I got the Milliput & filled it, it was a little large to take standard filler.  It'll only delay the build by a day & If I hadn't have done anything about it, I think I would be looking at saying 'I wish I filled that gap.  So I might miss my self imposed deadline, but at least I'll be happier with it.  I'm not quite sure if I'll make the deadline, I'm not too worried if I don't but I'm going to try my best to make it.  The main thing is getting it finished, anything else is a bonus.
