BPE means Buque de Proyección Estratégica (Strategic Projection Ship)
btw, Australian Navy is interested no?

I know the Aussies are interested in a similar ship, a through-deck LHD type. I don't know if they're going with a Spanish design or pursuing one of their own. It would be interesting to know.

That's a CGI, no? The real thing hasn't been launched yet.

Martin H

Must be a CGI Harro or a model, those Harriers are first generation Matadors/AV-8A's which are long gone from Spanish service.
I always hope for the best.
Unfortunately,
experience has taught me to expect the worst.

Size (of the stash) matters.

CGI, of course. Launch date is scheduled for 10-March-2008.

What's the airwing on there with the Harriers?  Seahawks and Sea Kings?

Oh boy, southern europe is spitting out those carriers and heli carriers like were it destroyers!

France has Charles de Gaulle, Jean D´Arc and 2 Mistrals
Italy has Giuseppe Garibaldi, with the carrier Cavour coming this year, and 3 San Giogrio assault carriers. Italy also made the Thai navy carrier.
Spain has Príncipe de Asturias, with Juan Carlos coming 2008.

Australia ordered 2 of these last year - they will be the Canberra Class LHDs!  See here:  http://www.lhd.tenix.com/

I'll also post some pics of models from the recent Pacific 2008 Naval expo shortly - see here: http://www.whatifmodelers.com/index.php/topic,18345.msg264008.html#new

Actually CdG is the only true carrier, Guiseppe Garribaldi, Cavour and principe de Asturias are Harrier Carriers the Mistral and Juan Carlos are LHD's (Bazan made the Thai Harrier Carrier which is a smaller version of PdeA)

The ironic thing is that Juan Carlos, whilst having a Ski Jump will only be suitable for Harriers ops. Spain has not yet signed up to F-35B and will thus be further down the waiting list. Its carrier ops will probably be only to cover PdA when she has a refit the rest of the time she will be a dedicated LHD. The key ship will be the replacement to PdA, will it be another harrier carrier, will it be a 2nd LHD, will it be a CVF type and if so CTOL or STOVL ?

Actually there is a slim possibility of Australia getting some F-35Bs for it's LHDs.

Does the ship have a motto yet?  If not, I would suggest the Kings own most famous words to date: "Porque no te callas?" ("Why don't you shut up?" spoken to a certain Latin American character known for his irritating verbosity).  It wouldn't be a bad ship's motto, especially for a warship.
"As long as people are going to call you a lunatic anyway, why not get the benefits of it?  It liberates you from convention."- from the novel WICKED by Gregory Maguire.

"I must really be crazy to be in a looney bin like this" - Jack Nicholson in the movie ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST

Very appropriate ship's motto. I vote for it!!!

Here here! Great motto.

The one thing these ships all have in common is hope that the US does carry through completion of development of the F-35B. If not, then all they'll be good for is helos and aging Harriers.
