BAC Lightning F.51 - No.9 Squadron, Pakistan Air Force, 1965

From the Wiki Hawker Hunter Page...

During the 1960s, Pakistan investigated the possibility of buying as many as 40 English Electric Lightnings; however, Britain was not enthusiastic about the potential sales opportunity because of the damage it would do to its relations with India, which at the time was still awaiting the delivery of large numbers of ex-RAF Hunters.

I was tempted to do a late model Spitfire in PAF markings (like the exported Hawker Fury), then considered a PAF Hunter but after reading the above snippet from the Hawker Hunter Wiki page I decided to do a PAF Lightning Mk.51 (an export F.2 without Firestreak). The yellow bordered markings (made for the PAF Spififire) are just a personal choice as I think they might have petered out by 1965 although many PAF F-104A's had them.

Again, this is a stock Third Wire Spitfire IX skin adapted to fit the Mk.24 (... meaning don't look too close!)

Surprisingly, despite this thread running for over five years now, this is my first Iraqi 'what if'! I quite like these old Iraqi markings and will do some more. What helps is the fact that, between WW2 and the Gulf War, the Iraqi Air Force have operated British, Soviet and French aircraft but never US (except for a few Lockheed JetStars) so I could give them British and French aircraft in the 60's and onward instead of Soviet aircraft or give them US aircraft.

I'm loving the new Griffon engined Spitfires and the XVIII comes with a lovely silver skin to which I've added some invasion stripes although you'll have to give me some artistic licence as the upperwing stripes shouldn't really be there. Similarly, the codes are totally out of me own 'ed and the fin/rudder stripe is just to match the spinner.

Of course there's nothing unusual about a Soviet Spitfire but I'm just about to read "The White Rose of Stalingrad" by Bill Yenne about Lidiya Vladimirovna Litvyak, the highest scoring female fighter pilot of all time, and wondered "what if" she her Yak-1M hadn't been shot down in the Summer of 1943 and her unit had re-equipped with the Spitfire IX?

Although I could have edited out the 303's I've left them on the skin and also added them in to the aircraft's data file. One of the nice things about Strike Fighters is that you can change the cannon/machine guns to something a bit more nation specific so the Hispano V's become 20mm ShVAK's and 303's get uprated to 12.7mm DShK-38 machine guns as there is no direct Soviet equivalent.

Whisper it quietly but I prefer the wing planform of these late Spitfires  ;)

I've enjoyed doing this one but can you guess what aeroplane is masquerading as the FMA19 Condor?

...And it's not the lovechild of a Ju-88 and a Stirling!

Of course, the P-63A in Soviet markings is not a 'what if' but shooting down a USAAF Corsair certainly is! I was adding the P-63A to my install and when testing decal positions I found that the 'blue' enemy consisted of my P-48C Corsairs (top of Page 53) so I captured this "Battle of Barking Creek" type moment.

It's been a while since I've done a 'what if' Vautour and the lovely stock Third Wire 3D model of a IIA with a stock silver skin is used here to create a FACH 'Vulture'. I like this one! Perhaps tomorrow I might try the same decals on the early IDF camo scheme.
