Sud Aviation Condor IIN - EC4/11 Jura, Armée de l'Air, 1963

Even before the Vautour's first flight in 1952 Sud-Ouest engineers were planning a supersonic follow-up with swept wings and afterburning Atar engines. Development moved slowly but the 1957 merger of Sud-Ouest and Sud-Est to form Sud Aviation saw the project leap forward and the prototype Condor IIN first flew in 1959 entering service with EC4/11 'Jura' in 1961. Initially armed with the poor Matra R-511 semi-active homing missile the Condor squadrons began to receive the Matra R-530 in infra-red and semi-active radar forms from late 1962. The only export customer was Israel who received 30 Condor IIN's in 1963 and used them to good effect in the 1967 Six-Day war before replacing them with Phantom F-4E's in 1974.

The 'Atlantique' was released recently by the prolific Veltro2K and comes in West German Marineflieger markings but, crucially, comes with a template that has allowed me to create a Nimrod type scheme. Perhaps in the swinging sixties this became an early Anglo-French project with Bristol getting the production licence?

I've previously done the 'Cub' in RAF service but thought I'd re-visit it for No.30 Squadron.

I wondered what 800NAS markings would look like on the Rhino so knocked-up this simple mod with the stock 'M' wearing the USN skin of the 'J'' but with the Spey engines of the 'M' spliced back in -if that makes sense!

Two different Superbugs exist as third-party add-on aircraft and this is the second to be released and it comes in 'E', 'F' and 'G' (Growler) flavours. Even better, a cracking templates exists allowing ham-fisted amateursTM like me to create this 'Desert Pink' RAF Superbug. It's not quite finished as I've missed the paint on the wingtip missile rails but I'm quite pleased with my weathering on this.

The Osprey book on the F-4K and F-4M reveals an interesting 'what if' scenario;

...the initial F-4M specification of 1965, a modification of the USN/RN SD-531, called for carrier capability. The Defence White Paper of February 1965 suggested that the RAF Phantom's carrier capability would increase the Phantom force's flexibility and might mean less would be needed.

By early 1966 such thoughts had been abandoned. But, in creating an overall EDSG scheme, I thought I'd use my recently created 800NAS and No.31 Squadron markings to create the two constituant units of 'Joint Force Phantom' created in 1974 and embarked upon HMS Ark Royal (leaving No.767 squadron aboard the refurbished HMS Eagle with a Buccaneer squadron). BTW I did mean to use slightly different red/blue ratios on the 800NAS Phantoms but forgot.

No.32 squadron are now the RAF's 'VIP' transport unit but have a more warlike past and, thankfully, they had colourful inter-war and post-war markings :drink:. I'll do something that takes advantage of their colourful markings tomorrow but for now here is a toned-down 'Cub' pretending to be the Handley-Page Helena C.3.

The United States 'Eagle' Roundel and Flag (similar to Australia's 'Roo' and New Zealand's 'Kiwi') are from MAKO69 at Combat Ace whilst I've used my 57th FIS markings with some additional fuselage bars.

dk1257's KF2 'Hammer' comes with this IDF scheme but without decals so I've decaled it up using No.69 IDF 'The Hammers' markings. I must admit that it is really rather good!
