I use Tamiya tape; seems to work without marring any finish.  If in doubt, I first touch the tape down to a clean surface in two different spots to slightly reduce the low-tack adhesive even further.  Ends up being just a little stronger than the temporary adhesive they use on 3M "Post-It" notes.

Here's another suave masking method:  tinfoil!  Looks like some weird, organic beastie.

I was experimenting with an entirely new (to me) method of NMF panel painting with these two.  From earlier posts in this thread, you might recall that I had used Tamiya's "Light Gun Metal" dusted over with their "Silver Leaf."  I taped off my various panel sections with Tamiya yellow tape then sprayed over the rest with the Silver Leaf, resulting in the very bright daylight pics up there.  The intent was to leave two, fairly distinct shades of metal when I pulled off all those little bits of tape.  This worked quite well.  Oh, and if you are really observant, you will detect at least one omission of masked panels between the two subject models (I screwed up, in other words).













NOW, the real trick and the innovation, is to hit the two contrasting NMF finishes with a coat of Tamiya's ingenius "Transparent Silver."  My idea is to lessen the contrast yet leave the distinction noticeable enough for photos and, hopefully, the different panels will seem to alter their respective tones when viewed in person as the viewer walks around the completed model.  Well, okay, basically, I want the model to give that variety of shimmering metal effects when I "fly" it around the house and the yard.

I'm sorry but due to this careless omission on your part I have totally lost confidence in your model building prowess
Of course looking at those two I had long ago lost all confidence in my own ability to glue 2 pieces of plastic together.
I'll go put on my dress now, I'll have to find something less complex than knitting though.

Seems that quilting is quite popular in the USA, but I was reliably informed that Texas is different.

Over here, crashing out in front of the TV watching cobblers like  is considered acceptable.

Okay, you cross-dressing, multi-talented styrene-master: just how long did it take for you to catch that missing pair of panels?!?!  Did I miss any others?  And where the heck were you when I showed the masking stage?!  Heh, heh....I still like the idea of you wearing a dress...knitting yet.

Heh - I just masked half my flying saucer disc by slipping it into an old envelope and taping it shut....

Great minds think alike! (and sometimes I accidentally copy them...... )

Juan Yelling Rodent as much as I sit and stare at these two bits of plastic porn it was easy to see the missing panels. I just assumed you did it on purpose. It could easily be explained by field replacment, a change in production line or just a change in finishing policy all of which happened all the time in real airplanes. I am really looking forward to seeing what they look like in the transparent silver.

Well Mr Howling Mouse, I doubt I'll be posting anything with NMF anytime soon. There's absolutely no way anything I could do would even remotely compare with the magnificent brilliance you've achieved!
