Lizard/Europe I/Luftwaffe in 80s.

Trying to paint an USAF fighter in Europe I scheme.

Which are the colours in your opinion?
I think the transport Lizard variant is different, at least the grey look lighter. No?
But in Luftwaffe's variant grey is very dark, almost black.

For my USAF fighter I am considering Humbrol: 116, 105, 111. What do you think?

Which are your options, please?

Carlos, Don Color lists the paints for the Euro I A-10A as FS34092 Dark Green, FS34102 Light Green & FS36081 Dark Gunship Grey.  F-4's substitute the Dark Green for FS34079 Forest Green.  Transports substitue the Dark Gunship Grey for FS36118 Medium Gunship Grey.

The Luftwaffe scheme is a little different. Don Color lists it as RAL 6003 Olivgrun, RAL 7021 Schwarzgrau & FS34079 Forest Green.

Colours in Humbrol from the IPMS Stockholm site are:
FS34079: Hu.116
FS34092: Hu.149
FS34102: Hu.117
FS36081: Hu.32
FS36118: Hu.125
RAL 6003: Hu.86
RAL 7021: Not listed, but Hu.33 should do, maybe with a touch of white.

Mossie is correct, but do be aware that FS595 colors do not have official names, only the numbers.  Many times the names get things very crossed up and confused.  Go by the numbers and you'll be okay.  On many A-10s in Euro I, the 36081 appeared a much lighter shade, closer to 36118, and nobody seems to know why.  Also, the 34102 often seemed much darker than it did on the SEA scheme (same color), again, no idea why.

And just to add to the confusion, The USAF F-4's that wore Euro 1 retained the two Vietnam era greens NOT the much blueier tone seen on the A-10/OV-10 etc etc.   :banghead:

Thanks Simon:
You have been very informative and helpful.
I was aware of IPMS Stockholm, but their references should not be taken as Godspel:

Hu-116 and Hu-117 are almost identical, mine at least. That is why I used 105 instead of 117. According with IHG, I use this combination for SEA camo too.
Hu-32 is way too dark for Europe I, but perhaps 111 is too light. In this point you may be right.

Oh yes, most definately.  The IPMS Stockholm colour lists are not perfect & should be used as a guide only.  They mention this in their guidelines, but still there's many people that would have you shot if you deviated from their lists! :banghead:

A variation in this theme:

I have an old Esci A-7 Corsair II. Intructions show an scheme that I did not know it ever existed:

USAF or maybe US National Guard.
Upper and lower surfaces with the same scheme. Only 2 colours: dark grey and olive drab. Humbrol 27 and 66 recomended.

Was it real?, should I switch to Europe I (3 colours)? :banghead:

Thanks in advance.

Very much real.  I'm doing that scheme on a ANG A-7K.  Colors are 34079 for the green and 36081 for the grey.  AFAIK those colors and scheme were unique to ANG A-7D/Ks.

Scooterman,

I believe that green + gray scheme was also used on the F-117 test groups A-7's.   4450th TG with the LV tail codes.  Maybe others also?

Gary, you're right about the 4450th.  They were a full time squadron supporting and developing new tactics for the ANG A-7 community.  At least thats what they said at first!  So it still 'fits in' with ANG machines.
