Frank, this build is awesome! Great idea and the build is wonderful! I've got some armor kits I've been wanting to build but have been waiting for my skills to develop a little more, but dang your build is inspirational and really making me want to go start one of those kits!

I love the finish on your tank, it's perfect.   I've had reasonable results with old rusty steel on my "Semi of Doom" project you can see it here http://www.whatifmodelers.com/index.php/topic,18413.0.html if you go through the build, I give a quick once over of how I did the steel, super easy

Jeff, I did use your build (here and at SSM) to get ideas on how to do the rust. I was having a hard time with the dark, oxidized steel color. I ended up using a piece of thin plastic rod to dab Testors Acryl raw sienna on a few spots.

"Le Scie du Diable" is finished. All that's left are the figures.

Here's a top view:

View of the rear. I know that the red light bar thingie should be blue, but I made it red. I'm also kinda proud of the bucket:

One of the reasons I took these pictures in the hot midday sun was to be able to do this:

I took this picture in the Mojave desert in December 2006. The area from about a mile from where this picture was taken to the other side of the valley is the US Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center. Shortly after I took this picture, they had some live fire exercises that were very loud, even though they were at least 4 miles away.

Those are soem great shots of some truly outstanding work, Frank! I really like the details you added like the machine gun with shell collector, the shovel, axe and other tools and the bucket! That shot of your "Devil's Saw" in the desert is a keeper!

bluntie

Frank that is a top notch build!
What i like most about the whole concept is that it could fit just about anywhere, anywhen. I can see in Berlin ,or on the Russian stepps, in an Orwellian future ,or as you have done here ,a desert. well done!!
For that hot weathered metal look pastels are your friend,i start with a reasonably dark grey patch, and mix a concoction of dark umber+rust+graphite pencil which i dust onto the patch.
[hot tip..to get the mix to stick rub the tip of your index finger in your ,or if folicaly challenged, some one elses hair then give the area to be treated a quick rub. the oil in your hair makes a great adhesive....strange but true ]
Now ,hurry up with those figures !!!!

a very nicely finished model!

Nice model and very realistic weathering.  I like the way you photoshoped it into the desert scene.

We don't just embrace insanity here.  We feel it up, french kiss it and then buy it a drink.

Thanks for the comments, guys! It's been a fun build, and not only did I not dropped the tank during construction, I didn't cut myself with an xacto (actually, Excel - even sharper) during the build - both very rare for me.

Bluntie - thanks for the pastel trick. is that what you used on your tank?

Sacre' Bloo! The things I miss by being too mono-forumic...When I saw the thread title I thought maybe
somebody was doing the giant buzzsaw from the old 'Blackhawks' comic...but this is a neat neat neat
build.

I'll have to remember the pastel trick as well-I've used them, but not to best effect.

Well, this is just ridiculously good.  We've sure picked up some bad-*ss super-talented modellers in the last while and you're one of them!

Thanks for the complement, JHM! I haven't had much building time; I've spent much of teh last three days boxing up and shipping out more than half of the models I had for sale. Great, but a lot of work!

I did work on one of the figures. I'm trying to duplicate this guy:

This is the Frankenstein Monster so far. He's a combination of several Dragon and Tamiya figures. The pose is a little off - but it's good enough for Whiff Government Work:

I have to do something about the right forearm - he looks like Popeye. Once I fix that and a couple of other issues (that always seem to appear when you take a picture...) he's off to get painted.

That vehicle is all kinds of awesome. Very cool idea, and brilliantly executed!
