Nils, any idea how big the object was?  If it was a honking great hunk of black, then I'd say black project.  If it appeared to be the size of a fighter, then UAV of some sort.

I'll say UAV, then.  Wonder who's playing with cool stuff up in your neck of the woods?

EADS, Dassault, BAe systems, Boeing, Lockheed, Grumman, SAGEM, various other french/european manufacturers. Could even be some R/C aircraft belonging to daring modellers.

Bingo.  At night, even professional observers are taught by more seasoned instructors just how bad their perception of distance and size really are.  Black Project aircraft do not advertise their presence with winglights on moonlit nights and I doubt extra-terrestrials would bother with lights they way people began reporting them to have when the flying saucer fad first began.
Styrene in my blood and an impressive void in my cranium.

I've seen something similar to what you describe on a number of occasions while out snakehunting in the desert. Dead silent, flat black, and seeming to move from very slow to fast in no time, without any evidence of propulsion.
Then, of course, there are the Phoenix Lights...same shape, but much larger.
