June 24th marks the 60th Anniversary of the Berlin Airlift, would a GB be on the cards?  Haven't got any ideas myself so far, but the cogs are whirring....

Simon.
I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

Great Group Build Idea, however i feel it doesn't fit the What-If aspect all that well as virtually every transport type of the period was pressed into service to do the job. Whif pickings would be few and far between unfortunately.

I know what you mean Geoff, the more I've thought about it the more I've realised options are limited.  The only real possible contributers are the US & Great Britain so it's difficult to bring anyone else in & you can only really swap their aircraft between each other.  France is a possibility, as one of the four occupying nations in Germany they maybe acquired a few transports as a token gesture.  Oterwise, I'm lacking ideas & unless anyone else has a moment of inspiration, it looks like this idea might fail at the first hurdle!

If it does, never mind eh, but it would be nice to commerate the occasion.

Another possible whiff aspect could be axis transports pressed into service, unless that was actually done. Might be interesting to see what one could do to the JU-52m or the Fw-200.

The French used the Ju-52 to supply their Berlin garrison during the blockade.

I guess if a Me-323 or two could have been found they would have been very useful.  It's thought that all were destroyed before the end of the war, but it's possible a very small number survived?  German bombers could have been modified to transports too, but may only have been used initailly as they were on the smaller side.  Although the DC-3 saw service during the airlift, it was withdrawn as unloading them took the same time as larger aircraft.

Don't think I would be up for this one but have an idea...

The Airlift happened today or in the 80's, etc.  Put modern airlifters in candy bomber markings, etc.

Or go the opposite way for us "Golden Age" fans....Berlin Airlift circa 1920. Can you imagine Vickers Vimys, LeOs, the R-38 etc. flying in the vittles?

There was some ridiculous stat about the C-17 - I forget the exact numbers, but it was something like 3 C-17s a day could carry the same amount as was delivered every day by the allies.

What if the allies are the siegers and the russians must supply their garrison?
What if the Stalingrad airlift? nazis on the move.

Sounds like an anonumous no-body somewhere trying to play up the C17's capabiliyies.

But modern people NEED more things. Just have a look to your garbage bin. Seriously.
And poor berliners would need some models a day  ;D ;D

Trust me, the Russians would have just sent their 5 million troops through the allied lines
