Would anyone know if the RCAF ever considered the Nimrod ?

Yep, was considered for the Argus replacement that the Aurora filled.

Have a look at this article from the Flight Archive Robert, it's great for information like potential operators.  The Nimrod was considered along with Aurora, an improved Atlantic & modified DC-10's & 707's.

I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

That article also mentions the "Improved Nimrod" of which I can find very little elsewhere. An earlier Flight article says that this was planned to have Spey 67 engines [1] and slipper tanks.

1: this engine was also considered for a larger BAC 1-11-700 variant which didn't progress beyond paper.

Doh!

I did do a search before posting --- honest.

Thanks everyone.

Okay so it'd be a bloody expensive kitbash, but has anyone considered what a Nimrod fuselage would look like with Vulcan wings?

You could call it an Avro Artemis....... ;D

Something like an Avro Atlantic I would imagine ----- come to think of it, how about an Atlantic converted to a maritime patroller---hmm!

Well that's what I was thinking about in a Patchwork World context. Avro would never have built the Vulcan bomber (no nukes, no strategic (in our terms) ambitions), so their big aircraft would be the Atlantic airliner. There would however be a maritime patrol requirement, which the Atlantic or something similar would suit.

Great minds think alike -- isn't that how it goes.

But what about a Vulcan with an added under-fuselage like a Nimrod  -------

Well there's certainly the ground clearance for it, but I'm not sure what the point would be? The Nimrod's pannier adds a bomb bay and a radome to a spacious pressurised cabin for a big crew. The Vulcan's already got a bomb bay and a radome and adding a pannier wouldn't make it any easier to add a big pressurised crew cabin......

Put the 'pannier' on the top then?

Yet another candidate for the 'World's Ugliest Aircraft' perhaps....... <_<
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

Or just have a bigger bomb bay . . . .

There'd be a reason for it: Vulcan AEW.3

Blend the original and pannier radomes together and you've enough room for an aerial with serious vertical resolution and 270 deg azimuth scan. Then pump up the tail bulge for a 90 deg scan "fighter radar" to cover the blind spot. You could run an AEW setup with the Vulcan's standard three GIBs if the "control" function was on the ground and datalinked. Alternatively, you could have a few extra peeps in the bomb bay in B-66 fashion.

Do as per the Phase 6 solution that used a cockpit plug to give the cabin crew 4 work stations with bang seats, except do this plug double size to give suitable crew stations.

Actually the Vulcan probobaly could accomodate the Nose radar without much mods and the tail radar of the Nimrod AEW3 without much problem, use the bomb bay to house the computers together with possibly an aux engine to generate the extra power, utilise the wing pylons for fuel tanks to extend range.

I was thinking along the lines that the Vulcan could be made to be like a Nimrod, the Nimrod has a lot of 'bods' to operate the equipment, they would have to go somewhere in a Vulcan.  From what I can remember of a 3-View I've seen of a Vulcan it has the crew capsule (pressure chamber), fuel tanks, bomb bay, ECM stuff (but correct me if I'm wrong here), in the Vulcan version, all the people would have to go where the fuel tanks are, the fuel tanks would have to move back where the bomb bay is, the bomb bay goes into the under-fuselage along with other stuff
