A project from my building archives is my creation of the YF-75 Merlin based on the Testors kit of the SR-75 Penetrator. By chopping the fuselage and adding a 1:48 cockpit tub and canopy I created a whole new conceptional fighter. Like the real Merlin, a small raptor that dives down upon it prey, this aircraft would strike in a similar manner. It would patrol high looking down for its intended targets.

Note the subtle application of feathers to the paint scheme.

The underside was rescribed to show new wheel bays and weapons bays as well as decals to facilitate sensors and recon camera windows. Can you picture this patrol along a county's borders carrying a suite of weapons to counter air and surface threats?

Its not the workbench that makes the model, it is the modeler at the workbench.

Me, I'm dishonest, and you can always trust a dishonest man to be dishonest.
Honestly, it's the honest ones you have to watch out for!!!

Perhaps a Russian movie called FireEagle, in which the Soviet KGB agent has to steal an F-15E FireEagle from the decadent west!

SUPERB! I disappear from the forum for a few weeks, and return to be bombarded with tons of amazingly executed concepts!

Very nice stuff!!!

I love the feathered paint effect. Think I might give it a crack on one of my future Sci-Fi projects.

Dude thats freakin awsome! Do the engines have thrust vectoring to help with maneuvering or is there some other method of control manipulation for getting in close?

I saw the technique of painting the feathers by watching an episode of "Trick My Truck" on CMT when the body guy was painting clouds on a rig. He used the same process to do flames. The process is a simple matter of cutting out a template, which I did using a piece of thin aluminum sheet. This provides the ability to clean off the paint when done or if it starts to build up and potentially drip off. A paper template could be used too and tossed away when loaded with paint. Lay the "feather" on the model, lightly mist a contrasting color. Move the feather to the side of the first one, repeat. Then move forward, repeat again and again until you have the area covered like you see on my model. I practiced on the fuel tank first, since if I screwed it up I could easily erase by overspraying the whole tank. It was real fun and turned out to be fairly easy. Just remember to use as little paint as you can...all you need is to create the perception of the feathers being there.
