i think the MPA320 is a good idea, but the A320 is only a regional aircraft with a short range/loiter time.
wouldnt it be better to use the A330 or Boeing 767 airframe 

to bad the Atantique III (AKA: the Dassault/Breguet Altantic NG) is no longer being offered, would have been a nice interim sollution.
the RAF could also go cheap and Lease ex-USN P-3 Orions

Actually, if you go with the A319, you can get the range up to 12000 km.

ortuitously there will, at that time, be an abdundance of ex-USN P-3s available...

Except that their fatigue lives will be very high thus requiring a complete rebuild to be useful.

I was just about to mention that.  Corrosion is also a big problem for the P-3.  I'd be very careful purchasing secondhand ones in case you end up with a KANIMBLA or a MANOORA (both ex-USN LPA ships which were notorious.  When purchased second-hand they were found to have extensive rust through the super-structure, requiring an expensive and length rebuild before the RAN could put them into service.  The USN knew about the rust but failed to inform the RAN and the RAN failed to, as one government minister famously put it, "kick the tyres" before buying them).

Giving this a bit more thought, I could use the Nimrod wings and attach them to a Transall ------- or a Belfast

That's where I got the idea, only I don't have anything remotely like the AW 681.  I think the Transall comes close though, the Belfast being a bit too big I think.
