i came to this idea when i was browsing another benelux modeling forum and someone was selling his 2 uncompleted tamiya 1/350 uss enterprise carriers (CVN-65) for only €75. this got me thinking, would it be plausible for the US or france to build a catamaran aircraft carrier, and would it have any advantages over the current conventional carriers. here's a few concepts i found
maybe i should build one some day  ;D

on the bench:

-all kinds of things.

That first image is actually a Trimaran (its the old AVPRO STAC).

Re "Would it be plausible for the US or france to build a catamaran aircraft carrier" - technically yes, but whether they would or not that's up to the world of whiff.

Re "would it have any advantages over the current conventional carriers" - maybe from a seakeeping/stability aspect, though I doubt it would be significant enough.  Maybe from the point of damage control?

Not very maneuverable, but perhaps as the hull for a SeaBase. Bridging the flight decks would make a lot of room for helos, especially if you clear the island that would end up on the centerline.

Lucky person to have space for two 1/350 carriers!  ;D

In want of hobby space!  The kitchen table is never stable.  Still managing to get some building done.

I am given to understand that most carriers feel the want for more hanger space than deck space.
The other way of looking at it, is connect your two carriers together, what ability do you have that you didn't have when they were sailing separately?

Seakeeping would be worse, imagine a 15 degree roll with that extreme beam, now add a pitching moment.

Some concepts just don't scale.

I haven't BUILT it, but I conceived this catamaran carrier and backstory:

http://www.combinedfleet.com/furashita/nibai_f.htm

"Large catamarans" have replaced many single-hulled ferries in bays, straits, and waterways around the world. They are several thousand tons in size. They seem to be MORE STABLE and steady and DON'T pitch, yaw, and roll as much. I wonder what the reasonable limit is on size. Truly, I don't know how well the beneficial effects "scale up" to 120,000+ ton seagoing vessels, but....?
My mind is like a compost heap: both "fertile" and "rotten"!
