The Luchs is so damn big it cries out for a bigger gun....

 Absolutely! I've tried comapring parts of the Bobby Boos LAV-150 turret to the Luchs and it seems the turret won't be too big and look just right. The turret rings (however accurate they are in the kits ) shows that the LAV turret's diameter is not much bigger than the standard Luchs turret's. I'll assemble the LAV turret and snap a couple of pics.
Test fit of a Leo 1A5 turret indicates that the Leo turret looks a good deal too big on the Luchs.

Nice one: looking forward to that, particularly since I've got a 1/72nd Luchs that I've pinched the turret off.....

Doesn't surprise me that the Leo turret doesn't fit: the Luchs is long and tall, but not that wide.

The French produced several types of 105mm tank guns.

I know there is a L56 CN-105-F1 for the AMX-30 capable of firing French-designed ammunitions as well as NATO-standard ones...... this gun was shortened to L44 and using reduced-propellant cartridges for the M51 Sherman.

Then there is another one for use with the AMX-13/105- from what source that bothered talking about it, the gun is derived from the one used by the AMX-30 as well, using reduced-propellant cartridges.

AMX-10RC uses a 105mm gun as well.  I couldn't find anything else on that gun.

Several questions I have here- first, are they all smoothbore guns?

Second, are they of the same family, or are at least some of them completely incompatible?  What is the relationship between the gun used by the AMX-10RC and all of the other guns mentioned in this post?

Finally, is it safe to assume that the L44 gun used by the Sherman is still bulkier and more powerful than the gun used by the AMX-13/105?

Sorry for dredging up another old topic, but I didn't know where else to post this.  I'm always looking through the slideshows attached to various news items, and sometimes I download them for future reference.  A couple of weeks ago, I came across an article about fighters in Afghanistan, and attached was the following photo.  I can't identify the machine gun.

I think it's a Chinese Type 77 HMG. Fires the Soviet 12.7 x 108mm round.

The French 105mm tank guns were not smoothbores. They fired a special HEAT round (Obus G) with a slip ring that fitted into the rifling grooves so it wouldn't spin at a rapid rate which would have adversely affected the formation of the shaped charge's high velocity jet. The gun in the AMX-10RC (and the TML 105 export turret) is a L48 version of the same 105mm rifled gun.

Hum...... so do all French 105mm gun belong to the same family?  How interchangeable are their shells?

Is there a fundamental difference between the L7 and, say, the main gun of the AMX-30?

Will die without understanding this world.

Now I thought that some of them couldn't use L7 ammo originally, because the AMX-10RC needed an upgrade 9not eventually done) to use it, as did some AMX-13-turreted vehicles. Then again, it was me that thought the AMX-30's gun was a smoothbore....

I'm interested in this machinegun mount...... does anyone have pictures showing details of it (particularly the "skate" part)?

Thanks in advance.

EDIT: joncarrfarrelly corrected me on terms.

Does anybody have any idea how to load DEFA ammo in Mirage? Do you remove the whole gun pack?

Ammo is loaded inside a "magazine", which is put inside the plane on the side above the cannon (in MF1) or close to him (M2K or MIII). Don't know if it's what you want to know...

Thanks in advance.

FYI the 'skate' is the moving part the MG attaches to, the fixed part is the 'rail'.

I have some detail pics somewhere, I'll have to do some digging but I'll
post the info after I find it.

Sorry I don't quite get it.
But I'm asking about the ammo loading procedures. Do you have to remove the gun pack prior to loading or not?

I found this image, which purports to be of ammo being loaded aboard an Alpha Jet, but I'm not clear on what is taking place.

I'll try to explain (but my technical English is not really good...)

The following drawing is for MF1.

All the ammo is load in the "magazine" (named "BOITE A CARTOUCHES" on the drawing).
The ammo belt is introduced in the part n°2 which is a guidance system for the belt ("COULOIR D'ARRIVEE DE MUNITIONS) connected to the cannon (rep. n°1 on the drawing).
You don't have to remove the gun prior to ammo installation. We load the weapon manually, by using various tools, to put a shell in firing chamber.

I've also add some explication on your pic
