now i don`t consider myself to be totally obsessed by model aircraft but after some prompting from my wife I`ve moved some kits into the loft, now as i did so i counted up that I have 51 unmade kits in my stash. Is this about right or am i excessive with my trips to hannants and ebay etc ?

give me an idea so i can fend off the avenging fury that is my wife with those golden words........." other people have more than me " and  " think yourself lucky your not married to ************ he has ?? kits in his loft "

51 kits  :o, thats more then what my LHS has at the moment
the maximum i have right now is 17 (16 unbuild + 1 to remain unbuild (vintage 60's RoG Apollo+lunar lander set))

kind to think of it, i really aught to get that stash slimmed  ;D

Ask yourself how many stamps, coins, steins, Hot Wheels, etc would I have if I collected those? It doesn't matter what you collect, it is up to personal preferences, space, budget and goals. What does IMO make a difference is if you call yourself a builder, are there more than you could ever build in a lifetime? That was one of the motivations for me to do two things. Start building more and less collecting. Thinned the stash to a level conducive with my output and when I do add something to the stash, I find something least attractive to build and dispose (sell) it to fund the consumables needed to build the others. Its all about choices. Some are harder than others.

Its not the workbench that makes the model, it is the modeler at the workbench.

erm! I have nearly 900, 250+ which are made or in the process of being made (about 50 I think).  SWMBO thinks I have too many but then I show her Barry' collection

1168 at the last count. and thats considered a modest stash on here LOL And thats just the unbuilt stuff.
I always hope for the best.
Unfortunately,
experience has taught me to expect the worst.

Size (of the stash) matters.

Had over 900 and shipped about 600 to Afghanistan. Took the remaining other than the random number of 56 and traded them at a LHS that also deals in scuba. I now have an almost complete set of coldwater scuba gear. I've begun reaquiring the things that tickle my fancy or just can't pass up and I'm over 100. Going to my club meeting this week and hoping to get another 8 that were offered online along with detaily bits, all for 60 bucks. Cripes, I must be insane.
Now asking me how many kits I've fininshed with any sense of pride in my work. ZERO.

Bwahahahahahahahahahahahaha.....

No wonder I have no money in the bank.

well have shown her those magic figures and she has just muttered darkly about space and selling on ebay , but as she is due to have our child in 2 days and can i believe kill me and get away with it in her condition i`m going to just sgree with her until she is more happy again. though of course she is the love of my life and she is carrying our future mig pilot so                                                                     :wub:to her

51 is nowt.  Still too many in reality, bit nowt in the great scheme of things.

I try and describe it to Mrs Nev as like her CD or Book collection.  How boring would it be if you only had 6 CDs to choose from?  A nice selection of kits allows you to pick and choose a model to build as the whim takes you....

But over 1000 is just silly ;)

Onyl, I say, ONLY 51 kits? Like the others I have over 500 unbuilt last count. Those Trumpeter and Revell and Hasegawa 1/32 kits take up a lot of space.

How many old romantic comedy movies are too many?

How much fashion accessorizing is too much?

These questions are in the same realm as 'how many kits are too many" aren't they, just different sides of the very same coin.

Best of everything with the up and coming childbirth; there's nothing like it.    And when they begin to help you build your kits is pretty cool too.

A woman's possessions are hers (including you). They do not fall under the same rules as does a mans. What's hers is hers and what yours is hers. By this law she can judge the stash to be excessive. If you challenge her opinion by bringing up the number of shoes and purses she owns, you are doing nothing more than how much weight she's having added to your new shoes. The stylish cement ones! Keep pressing the issue and you'll be sleeping with the fishes.

Women hold eminent domain rights to you and your stash!

Oh well she can believe that if she wants, for me my lady doesn't have issues with it as long as it doesn't or did deprive the family of anything. Its been that way for twenty nine years! You guys starting out, better learn where you stand fast...before we find your collection For Sale someplace and you sleeping with the...

My kit stash is usually between 35 - 60 total and from what I've read here and on other boards, that's on the small side. Since I average a completed model about every 10-14 days, I've got enough to keepme going for about 8 or 9 months. My answer to "How many is too many?" would depend on a few things such as space, financial resources, and how many you build. As long as you're not depriving your family of anything, they should keep quiet and let you enjoy your hobby as far as I'm concerned.

Think I have around 120 right now but only averaging about 4 builds per year.  I have thinned the herd several times and probably need to do it again (and no Brian, no more 72nd biplanes). Course, have several more on the want list

One of the guys in my club used to have over 3,000 unbuilt kits to go along with the over 1,700 finished models he has (Guiness World Record holder for Aircraft models back in 2004).  His 2nd wife is a little more understanding but he has been thinning the collection for several years, most recently at SLC-08.
