Dang shapes were settin there looking at me. I needed a Douglas Dauntless for the airbrakes, I needed a Corsair for the oil coolers, and I had a engine cowling from a Black widow. They were taunting me.

The nose will be shorter as I will eliminate the existing fuselage mounted louvers.

Interesting looking concept STS,

It almost looks like a Boomerang on steroids.

Where'd the designator come from?  CAC ships were usually CA-?? at least during the war.

Well the Dauntless was called an SBD and I was gonna call it an F-6 S  but that didn't seem to flow. If you've read any of my other backstories you know in my universe the US doesn't enter the war until  '43 so this will be a Douglas design modified by CAC into a fighter and produced in Austrailia and New Zealand. I may change the designator.... suggestions?

Sotool,

Ok, so it's Yank origin, which sorta bounces the CAC designator.  SBD "Scout Bomber Douglas", so maybe FBD "Fighter Bomber Douglas" or just FD "Fighter Douglas"?  Have to toss in an Aussie name for it and ??? FB Mk I sounds like a winner.

Oh & one minor note, the Buccaneer name was already used by Brewster for a fairly ordinary aircraft in that timeframe.

This one's as cool as the other side of my pillow, Toolslinger! I really like the rakish look of the cockpit and fairing! Your backstory could refence a joint effort between Vought and Douglas and you could call it the F-5DU.

Ok, I'll get my coat...

Looks like another awesome build in the works

All right, thanks for all the suggestions and comments. Please keep them coming. Please note after having been on this site for this long I absolutely could not resist...... this

1936
With the continued Japanese aggression  towards China and the continuing movement to take more of the Pacific island chains Austrailia decided that they had better move forward with a new aircraft specifically designed to take off and land on short unimproved  runways and even empty fields. The ability to utilize the new aircraft carriers was also of prime importance.

Ruggedness and long range was of primary importance. The new retractable landing gear most aircraft manufacturers were experimenting with was deemed to fragile for the requirements so a tough  set of spatted landing gear was specified.

Since  the craft was designed to land on rough ground the rear horizontal control surfaces were moved to the highest possible position to reduce damage.

This was also one of the first aircraft developed to use the newer more powerful twin row radial engines

So what do I call it. Buccaneer  is apparently taken, Corsairs exist(or will) in my universe, I thought of Aggressor but that sounds too American and or politically incorrect so (and I'm looking at you Puddingwrestler) give me a good appropriate name. ;D

I think I'm in heaven!!! Love the spats and the T-tail, Toolslinger! It's interesting you decided to add the spats as your cockpit mod made me immediately think of a Japanese Mitsubishi A5M Claude. I really like your explanation for the T-tail!

Oh, the SPATS! are okay, too.  I suppose...

Hey, I just saw on Lenny's Excalibur thread where you used the term "Gunslinger"
Um, wouldn't that fit this new one of yours?
