In the book 'The Big Show' Clostermann writes that even though he had been warned about the torque of the Hawker Typhoon when he first flew it, he was still caught by surprise and very nearly hit a hanger when it swung off line as he took off.  What is interesting in this story was that there was a hanger that was closer to the runway which had been hit a couple of times by novice Typhoon pilots so they took it down for safety reasons

In the story I quoted below, the NAAFI canteen was actually scabbed onto the side of one hanger, with another next to it, so the Martlet pilot (and Gawd knows how many other people) was exceedingly lucky to cartwheel between them.

The same author went on to fly Corsairs off HMS Illustrious in the far east, and he talks about "crabbing" towards a carrier landing with the rudder deflected until the last minute, just in order to keep sight of the deck... (remember the USMC refused to certify the Corsair for deck ops full stop... the UK was less choosy/more desperate by then.... ).

I guess this was part of the reason contra props started to become popular post war.  The more powerful engines became, the more there was a need to counter the increased torque.
