I am new to the forum, but the Rotodyne is one of my interests. I saw, in looking through this thread, a link to Mossie's wonderful    series of profiles of the Rotodyne Z in various military and civil colour schemes. I would like to beg that he consider doing a few more. My own suggestions would be NZNAC who operated the F-27, but could have used the Rotodyne for many of their short-haul flights instead; Air New Zealand who took them over in the 1970s; Polynesian Airlines and Fiji Airways who did so much South Pacific island hopping in the '70s; and perhaps SPANZ with the enlarged windows.

I work for WestJet at present and often thought what a great candidate for short-haul intercity use by WestJet Encore the Rotodyne would be: the Eastern Triangle (which now has four cities - Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa and La Guardia); Calgary - Edmonton and Vancouver-Victoria. In several cases there are downtown small airports which would be more convenient than the larger out-of-town ones in current use.

Nice concept. I can see a few issued with it that could be improved:

1. Needs lower cockpit side windows for downwards vision in the hover.

2. Engines need to be further inboard and underslung in pods. Where they are, the jetwash would scrub one side of the fins and the engine-out asymetry would be vicious.

3. The tailplanes don't look stong enough to support the tip fins. I think they need a broader chord and reduced span.

Glad you liked them and welcome to the forum!  Your the second person in a few days to request new profiles so I'm happy to create some new ones.  Unfortunately my main computer died some weeks ago so I've been posting from my phone and works computer.  I'm looking into getting a new one, but it might take a few weeks or so and then it depends on recovering all my old files, which I think should okay.

If you haven't already got it, I'd recommend the David Gibbings book on the Fairey Rotodyne.  Lots of details, drawings and text on both the Type Y and proposed Type Z/FA1:

I've wondered if the Ah-56 could have been converted into an autogyro attack craft, or even a Rotodyne type craft.

Lose the torque reaction rotor, replace the main rotor with a Rotodyne type rotor, and use bleed air to give manoeuvrability in hovering flight, a la Harrier.

The AH56 had a pusher prop at the tail.  The complex rotorhead assembly let it down but by the time it was axed, Lockheed had eliminated most of the bugs.
