Here's an excuse to break out those kits of 80s whiffs and cold war paper projects... how about a GB themed around...

REALLY REALLY REALLY FAST AIRCRAFT

And by fast I don't mean "hey yeah that's kinda quick" I mean "ZOMG THE SKIN IS MELTING OFF AND I'M ON FIRE :o"

What's fast you say? I suppose a rough rule would be...

Biplane and "early" monoplane: 325+mph

Piston engined "modern" monoplane: 475+mph (heh, anyone have leftover ideas from piston perfection?)

Jet/rocket propelled, up to 1945ish: 600+mph

Jet/rocket propelled, 1945ish-1960: Mach 2

Jet/rocket propelled, 1960-present: Mach 2.5+, preferrably above Mach 3.

Mind you, these are rough rules. The idea is to have something insanely fast for its era, foxbats, blackbirds, and whatnot. If you find lots of production aircraft in the same timeframe with the same intended speed, then it's not fast enough.

Are spacecraft allowed? Depending on how you define spacecraft. If the aircraft's speed is produced by the vehicle's own thrust rather than gravity and the aircraft moves through enough atmosphere for aerodynamics to matter, then yes, it's allowed. Basically it has to be "more airplane" than NASA's space shuttle orbiter. So basically things like the X-15 count.

I suppose things similar to the X-43 count as well but it'd be nice to have something bigger and perhaps manned.

All kinds of non-spacecraft whiffs, regardless of operator, crew compliment, and vehicle role are allowed, just make the thing damned quick

So what's the minimum design speed for a biplane then?

I'm only asking on BdB's behalf, you understand....... ;D

sounds good

max speed for a biplane is ~323mph, by a fiat CR42 with a DB 601 strapped on somehow, merlin engined gloster gladiator anyone?
click here for other speed records
plenty of bizzaro schnider trophy ideas out there to like that italian hodrofoiloplane

Updated to accomodate more aircraft types. I'm no expert in aircraft of the spatted era but I'm sure whoever is(read: BdB), knows how to make a fast one.

What about Helicopters??? would this one count lol

I do have an AirWolf kit in my stash or how about a super fast armored vehicle something that could blow the hatches off an abrams maybe???

The fastest tank is the Alvis Scorpion, iirc (around 100 km/h).

The Scorpion may have been the fastest vehicle in Europe, but here in the United States, I think the M113 HSTD was a wee bit faster at 75.76 mph (121.5kph).
Of course it did not hurt to have a pair of mighty MOPAR Chrysler 440 cu. in (7.21 liter) V8 engines stuffed into the hull which technically gave the vehicle a
total of 880 cu.in. (14.42 Liter) for a power source.  Guess it was smart to have added a roll bar to the top of the vehicle but did they add a parachute?

Quote(From the JED Site) M113 [HOTROD] HIGH-SPEED TECHNOLOGY DEMONSTRATOR

The M113 High-speed technology demonstrator aka Hot-Rod was fitted with two 440 cubic-inch Chrysler petrol
engines driving through two modified 770 transmissions. During tests at Fort Knox during 1979 the vehicle attained
a maximum speed of 75.76mph along a gravel track.

I have a High Planes 1:48 "Precious Metal" Mustang HOPEFULLY on its way that I will whiff, a Speed GB would be perfect for it! Count me in!

As we say in the flying world, redline is a goal, not a limitation!

Since I picked up a pair of Monogram Orient Express spaceplanes this week, this might be an interesting GB.  There's also an old Monogram X-15 in the stash that I keep eyeing, and I've got a long term plan to do a 500kt Dornier Pfiel with a pointy nose and a big turboprop in the back.

I'd certainl,y like to see it on the next monthly poll.

So I got that going for me...which is nice....

Hobbes

As it turns out, I overestimated the top speed of the Scorpion, the record (set by a modernized variant a few years ago) is 82 km/h. That's for a production vehicle, not a one-off demonstrator.

Daryl J.

So, for the bipes, one needs an Albatros D.V with swept clipped wings, a pointed spinner, a lengthened nose to accomodate a gas turbine engine with fat, stubby prop blades, and of course the requisite BdB wheel coverings.

For WW1, think Coanda.

For early WW2, think Lockheed L-133.
