Hi all!

Remember the Egyptian AF Yak-11 I restored a coupla years back?:

Well, in a fit of inspiration - some may say madness, others heresy - I've decided to put her into the workshop for a few months and bet her Renofied!

I'm still working through jobs and plans with my engineers, but at the moment it looks like:

- new bubble canopy
- new engine with a three-bladed race prop
- forward cockpit instrumentation removed and faired over
- Mustang wheels and brakes
- a slick new paint job! :P

So stay tuned for updates.....here's hoping that come September Team "Yak Attack" will be tearing around the pylons!

Try not. Do. Or do not. There is no try.

Is that the solid-resin Model-Aire International version from c. 1985?

My friend Tom Young started up the cottage-industry "Model-Aire International" with a line of about 8-10 model resin kits. The Yak-11 was his first effort, and I was the first person to build one of his kits.  I made a master aircraft for his Ki-100 (one of my favorite aircraft, and no decent production kits out there at the time), but his company folded before it could be produced.
My mind is like a compost heap: both "fertile" and "rotten"!

Zac takes a whack at a Yak from way back? Zac's got the knack and this is only the first Yak in the stack!

Haha thanks Brian! :P

SR, nope, this is an injection Eastern European kit, I forget the make.

UPDATES!

First steps are removal of the AsH-21 radial and cowls, and filling in the front cockpit.

Shape of things to come....

A LOT of streamlining is being done with the new cowl for the Wright 3350 and also the new bubble canopy, originally sourced from a Thunder Mustang.

So far the 3350 installation is concerned, it's running well on the ground and taxi tests are promising. A cut-down Corsair prop and modified P-40N spinner are up front.

She's gone into the paintshop and will be revealed soon. Looking for sponsors to come on board as well :D.

Those are some really sweet mods, Zac! You've captured the Reno Racer look perfectly!

Currently waiting for the 93rd coat of Gloss Red to dry on the uppers. Meantime, here's a rough look at the scheme - racing number yet to be decided.

Hi all!

92 coats of rattlecan Gloss Red later, the paint's done!

Now I just have to figure out what number to pop on.....and locate sponsor decals.........oh the joys of racing......

;D Thanks Brian! Car enamel, I think. It's odd - the underside is glossy but not up top.....anyways, I'll do my first attempt at model varnishing once all markings are on.

Thomas - haha, I'm not that egocentric! I'm content just to put my name under the windowscreen.

Hi all!

Yak-11 ZK-YXI has been struck off the NZ civil register and shipped to the US. Reassembled and test flown at Chino, she will be hangared there until late August.

May I present: N1115YA, Yak Attack, Race #15:

Still waiting for some sponsorship details to be sorted in order to add some more COLOUR to the scheme!

And no, I'm not silly enough to race her at Reno just yet! (Steven Hinton, son of Steve, will fly her, while I try my luck in the T-6 Class!)
