How about "The Whiffies"

Ok, just saw JHM's Fontaine Camo bird and made me think about a "WHIF of the Year" award.  Of course, my addled mind doesn't stop there.  So, how about our own version of the Oscars, Emmys, etc?

Any Whiff build completed during the year and done by a member of the Forum is elligible.  All GB winners are automatically entered while other models must be nominated by at least 2 individuals (not counting the builder).  Maybe even separate categories like Best Alternate Markings, Best Camo, Best Kitbash, Best Scratchbuilt, Best Armor, etc.  Even a Best Real World Model built by a Whiffer.  The pride and joy would be the Whiff of the Year.

So, what do you all think?

Might be fun.  Would we have to dress up?   ;D
So I got that going for me...which is nice....

An appropriate statuette could be interesting.... How about an aircraft made from a ridiculously random collection of bits glued together (Lightning wing one side, Spitfire wing the other) and sprayed gold? ;D

Pretty sure I have an old bowling trophy around someplace we could add that to.

AD - Of course we have to dress up.  Your best T-Shirt (preferably with an airplane or some such on it).

Shas - I don't normally drink rum (or anything else) but if you put it in some froo froo Daquiri or something, I could make an exception

Sounds like a blast but the huge level of talent and large number of entries would require a board of judges to sort through all the .....stuff.

Hence the "nomination" process.  All the GB winners get an automatic nomination.  Add to that the number that we actually take the time to nominate would probably put the total at some managable number (like a well attended GB).

Any other ideas for Categories besides the suggestions I made above.

If there is enough support for this, I would volunteer (who said that) to help with the organization and voting for this.

Instead of a trophy, why not arrange it to be a prize?  Is someone willing to donate a kit for the First, Second, Third Place?  Maybe include an Honorable Mention?  Maybe a gift certificate instead of a kit since postage is such a challenge on the wallet now.  That way the winner(s) could spend the reward on the kit or beverage of their choosing...

Jeff,
I was thinking of a Certificate of some type that could be displayed with the models at local shows (although I do like the idea of a Whiff Trophy for the Best of).

Instead of 1st, 2nd, etc there would be winners in each of the Categories (like Best Actor, Best Movie, Best Makeup applied by a left handed person, etc).  The number of categories could be limited or expanded (especially if we are doing Certificates) to whatever strikes our fancy.  My local shows have Sponsored awards like Best Korean War model, Best Sherman, Best Paint, etc.  Certificates could be emailed to the winners (avoiding postage) for them to print on their paper of choice.

This is a great idea.  A nice democratic voting system like we use on other GB's would be just fine, don't ya think?

As for categories, why not just do a single inclusive deal, and allow First through Fifth places to get the certificate?  I think with the enormous pool of talent we have here, we're pretty assured to get a good cross section of winners.

I like the idea of a Whiffed trophy, maybe one that can be passed around from year to year?

However it goes, it sounds like fun to me.

Sounds cool I would happily contribute to the winners fund . Who will be the treasurer , and do you have Paypal?

I like the idea of multiple categories, but I think it would be very easy for it to become unwieldy and get out of hand (like the Oscars).  Maybe keep it somewhat like the Oscars where the membership nominates the finalists and a single "Best Whif of 2008" award, but with categories below that for stuff like Best Kitbash, Best Armour, Best Sci-Fi, Best Medium other than Styrene, Best Pre-war, WWII era, Post-War, Best Raspberry Ripple Mig,  etc,

Winners/placers could get a certificate as suggested, but how about also some sort of notation in their member info, maybe even a little trophy icon in there?  I'm an IT moron, but surely that wouldnt be difficult.  As for prizes, I'm sure we can come up with a decent stash of kits, decals, books ets to support this, and maybe a Gift Cert to Hannants/Squadron/your country's best online shop.

Phil, this is a great idea you've started.  It's something that's crossed my mind when I've seen certain builds posted in the past.

So I got that going for me...which is nice....

Sounds cool but - alas I fear it would just be a revolving award shared by JHM, Cthulu77 and AeroplaneDriver.  No offence to those guys, they are all HUGELY talented, and they dominate the Group Build voting (with good reason mind).

I would rather we have a series of awards - like the Hall Of Fame ones seen on other forums - voted on annually by the members.  These could include things like

Most helpful member
Funniest member
Best model (stil keep it, but have it as one award amongst several)
Best profile
Best backstory

Nick's idea about the trophy icon is a good one - I've seen it on other forums, it goes just underneath the avatar.

Thats a great idea!! along with the actual awards for 1st, 2nd, Etc. But it wont matter like the emmys and oscars its all political!! J/K i think its brilliant... I would like to thank the academy...
