I remember early concept of land-based Barak VL launcher trailer has an integrated Phalanx mount, too.

Can the launcher station of the Avenger system be installed into vehicles previously euipped with Quad .50 cal. MG or Chaparral launcher?
To the individual soldiers, *everything* is a frontal assault!

I wonder about mounting an anti-aircraft gun on a CVR(T)?  The Scimitar had it's 30mm Rarden cannon that might have been useful with some more traverse, although I'm thinking more of the Striker & Stormer, replacing the Swingfire & Starstreak with something shooty.  The Stormer 30 had a Bushmaster in a turret with TOW's, so putting the weapon on a different mount & swapping the missiles for HVM's shouldn't be too much of a stretch?
I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

Rarden is magazine fed.  So ROF is rather limited (essentially its a semi-automatic weapon although it can fire bursts).  Traverse is also relatively slow on the Scimitar and Sabre. Both factors limit its usefulness, apart from the lack of adequate sights, in the AAA role.  Most AA turrets are fairly specialised with high slewing rates and higher elevations than normal turrets.   If you want an SPAA then you need one which has high speed traverse, high speed elevation, consumate computing sights and some sort of alerting system (ie IR or Radar).

I was thinking more on the lines of a modified turret, using the Striker or Stormer hulls with them having a bit more depth & beef to take a more complex mount.  The Scimitar was just the platform that kicked the idea off.

Exactly what I thought of.  Give it some RPG screens or bar armor, and maybe beef up the turret protection a little, and set it loose in SW Asia.

Vulcan Commando looks cool!  *eyes-HobbyBoss-Commando-in-stash*

For some reason, I'd have thought a fit like that would be much bigger. But this is not the turret as seen on the M163 Vulcan, is it? Or is it the same turret, but only with an exterior ammo can?
Cheers,
Moritz

Speaking of the French, ever seen a Javelot? Early '80s SPAAR (Self Propelled Anti-Aircraft Rocket Launcher): typical SPAAG turret with radar on an AMX-30 chassis, but the weapon was a central box full of long, closed-breech tubes, each loaded with multiple high-velocity rockets (think the calibre was 57mm, but I'm not sure). The idea was to fill a box of sky bigger than the error margin of the radar with sufficient density of warheads to ensure a hit. There was a naval version, which looked very different called Catulle, too. The whole thing was dropped for reasons I don't know.

I was reading back through this thread to refresh my memory, and noticed no reply to this question.  I was curious, so I did some Googling, and found the following in the FlightGlobal archive from 1973:

QuoteThomson/CSF Javelot/Catulle   Respectively land-based and ship-based versions of a 96-barrel anti-aircraft salvo gun firing 40mm projectiles with proximity fuzes in a controlled dispersion pattern and over a 2km, 1-25 miles range.

A reference also appears in the 1977 listing, in a piece about the Saudis buying the Crotale SAM system.  It says:

QuoteThe Saudis will also receive AMX30SA radar-directed twinbarrelled 30mm anti-aircraft cannon, four or five of these vehicles being deployed for each Crotale tank, and may deploy Javelot surface-to-air rocket launchers for close-in air defence.

I also found the following on Secret Projects, quoted from a Bill Gunston reference book.

QuoteProject for a close defense weapon, based on a spin stabilised 40mm rocket with a length of 370mm and a range of 1500m. The magazine was housing 64 rockets, that could be fired in salvoes of 8, 16, or 32 rockets, aimed by the integral radar or an optical system. The magazines could be
replaced within 30 seconds, kill probabilty against a target in 1500m was expected to be around 70%. The design was drawn in 1978 by Thomson-
CSF as the main contractor, a navalised variant was known under the name Catulle.

There was even a picture.

It is not the same as the M163 (which uses the M157 mount), the M167 is the trailer mounted version with linked feed,
and numerous other differences.

You wouldn't happen to have a slightly larger version of the profile view here. I'm curious as to know what the dimensions pictured are.
