Ive gone for version 2, great idea btw. I like the idea of the extended crew area, but I dont know if its practicle or not. Good luck and look forwards to seeing this one done

To me, if you've got a decent overwater radar fitted, the additional undernose radome would be superfluous.  I think either looks quite good, but I'd reduce the size of the FLIR turret as it looks quite large compared to the airframe.  The Vulcan's a big ship and a FLIR system would be less noticeable.

thanks for the support and comments mav and bex, i've reduced the size of the flir turret but i'm not sure if it's still to big.

BK,

I'd say you have two options now.  As is, I'd say it's about A-6 TRAM sized, so it's FLIR, laser and whatever else they can cram in.  If it goes smaller, it becomes pure FLIR only, which I guess is more compatible with the idea of a maritime platform but less flexible in application.

I agree with Bex too about the extended cabin.  Kinda reminds me of the extended nose they threw on our Lincolns for the mission during the 50s and adds to the 'different' feel of the thing.  Might also balance out the MAD boom for CoG issues.

thanks for all your help mav i think i've finally achieved the final look with the extended cabin and i will build the vulcan up as 2 when i have cleared some space on my work bench.

The problem with the extended cabin is that CofG issues are particularly sensitive on a tailless delta: you can't just tweak the tailplane a bit.....

Having said that, you could balance it by a larger diameter extended tail cone, which incorporates not only the MAD but the sonobuoys as well, thereby freeing up space in the bomb bay. That would give you the extra side-area needed as well.

The FLIR turret sticks out a long way. I'd be inclined to either mount it closer to the fuselage, or if it has to hang down that far, make the fairing around it more streamlined.

I'm still on the fence about your original Jaguar nose. I think, if done right, it could look pretty cool. From your profile, it looks like too much of a step underneath. If you could somehow keep a more 'Vulcan' look.....

Also, the MAD boom looks like it sticks up to much.

As for the FLIR ( if that's what your asking about ) CDN Auroras ( and probably US Orions ? ) have a recessed one under the nose. What about doing something in between each engine ? Isn't there an ECM fit under one of them already ?

As the guys were saying...very cool project, and please keep the updates coming !

Ive been thinking about this all morning now, and like Weaver, my only concern is the C of G issues with the cabin extension, and as he said your only real option is to extend the tail cone / MAD Boom, but then you need to calculate the clearances of the tail area for take off and landing etc.

I still prefer option 2, but with some tinkering it will work    Shall I presume youre using the Airfix 72nd Vulcan for this?

yes i'll be using the airfix 72 vulcan and some parts from the nimrod. but atm this project won't be started for a while until i finish my current aew/recon/asw projects on my workbench. I may have reduce the size of the rear cabin by a couple of windows to correct the c of g issues.

How about just stretching it a bit, so that you can have four operators sat lengthways? Mind you, I'm not sure that the Vulcan fuselage cross section is big enough for sideways seating and a reasonably deep console, if the operators are to sit upright.

i like the idea of 4 operators sat side by side but they would be very cramped inside.
