Outstanding work! Your attention to detail is superb. I don't know if it would make a difference in the direction you're going, but if you were looking to add more detail to your figures, salt marks would be realistic. When ever we used the salt water hoses on deck for flightdeck washdowns, the salt from the water would soak into the leather. No matter how much you polished the boots afterward, the salt would work it's way out, especially in the natural folds of the leather from walking. Either way, thanks for dredging up some forgotten memories... Great work on your boat!

Do you think a light grey or off white wash or drybrush?  (this is why I love this site...all of the information!)

I've just gone back and read this through from the beginning.

I only build in 1/72 (apart from some GW tanks and skeleton warriors ) and I'll never build a ship, but it's still amazing (and informative) watching this come together with a lot of materials and techniques that I wouldn't normally use. Fascinating and beautiful work.

This kind of big projects are definitely out of my reach :banghead:

Well, I am glad you all like it so far !  It is fun to warp the diorama as comments come in...almost a group build of sorts.

Starting to place some of the figures in their pre-final paint job, like this guy in the crow's nest:

In the time it's taken me to put one tank together you've scratchbuilt a whole boat. I am seriously impressed. How did you do the life jackets again?

I invite all and any criticism, except about Eric The Dog, it's not his fault he's stupid

Thanks Leigh, but really, it is mostly due to a slow work period, and having a serious flu virus for the last week or so...

The life jackets were made from thick paper, cut out from a pattern, painted orange, and then glued onto the back of each sailor. I used red painted masking tape for the webbing.

The Wehrmacht actually made fun of the Danish helmets... (they are almost identical to East German helmets):
