.......well not until I sort out a proper place to do it, anyway..... ;D

When I got back into modelling (your fault......) I made a deal with my mother (who I live with) that I could use her painting "den" for model making until the Flying Sorcery GB was finished, but that I had to move out after that. She doesn't actually paint any more, you understand, nor will she do anything with the room except store stuff in it, but she still wants me out because model-making doesn't look nice and a visitor who goes upstairs to the loo might wander about and actually see it.... :o

So, before anything else gets built, all this (which is just around the corner from my bedroom):

has to go up these stairs  :

into the attic:

Where the "stash" (stop laughing at the back) already lurks:

There's actually rather more room in the attic that there appears, since loads of stuff has just been dumped in there rather than properly organised. There's a nice length of old kitchen worktop (just out of shot) and several old storage units to stand it on. Also, the attic used to be my late father's woodworking shop, so it's well supplied with power points.

What it isn't well supplied with though, is temperature control. Despite being a "proper" room, rather than just a loft, it's still above all the insulation, which means it's unbearably hot in summer and cold in winter, and with the way energy prices are going, I'm not keen to solve that with heaters and fans. I also don't want this to turn into a prolonged "doing up the attic" DIY job (which mum would love  ), partly 'cos I don't want to spend too much modelling/motorbiking time on it, and partly because I don't want it so nice-looking that SWMBO gets houseproud about it and starts nagging me to keep it tidy too.......(you don't live with somebody for 40 years without learning something about their psychology..... ;D) So the current plan is to get some of those foil-coated insulation boards, and simply fasten them to the ceiling: the silver will help to bounce light about from the one small window, too.

Progress updates will be posted........

Good luck with your new den

It looks like my "studio", the place where we throw everything storable or not just to keep it out of the way...... I'm in the same process, to arrange my books and models and setting up a new bench and display area.

Wait, where was the stash again???

Seriously, though, I'd go with your plan; add a little insulation to try and keep it bearable, tidy up and give yourself some room to work and make do with what you've got.  I've got my setup out in the garage, and it's great in the spring and fall, but in the winter, I bring the bare minimum indoors and use a small heater when I have to be out at the bench.  In the summer I try to get some air moving with fans, but again, I can bring some things to the table inside if I want.

At least you're in operation!    I had 15X15 feet in an unfinished basement room and The Missus moved in her crap.   Most of that stuff belongs in a garbage can but she just can't part with it and .......dead stop.    The Steambouy was done on the dinner table around the piles of garbage on it.

Those first two pics have to be the most disorienting things I've seen in quite awhile.

Gee, Weaver.  Those off-angle photos made me dizzy.  I can just imagine maneuvering all that stuff up those steep stairs.  Don't mind about the stash.  All of us started out with that amount of stuff, or less.  You'll be filling a storage unit like jeffry or JHM anytime.   ;D

Sorry about the wonky photos - I was going to fix them just after I posted them, but my PC chose that moment to have an attack of the vapours, so I've spent less of the time since then fixing up the den, and more of it banging my head on the keyboard, than I'd consider ideal........

Anyway, fixed now (photos and PC).

I've now got enough elbow room for a ROUGH mockup, to see how everything fits:

Slightly odd layout, but it makes best use of what's already there.

Not too shabby Weaver. Considerably better than what I've got at the moment. I'm also living with my parents at the moment, living out of thier dining room as it's the only spare room in thier bungalow. Currently using mum's dining table as a computer workstation/desk/modelling station. I DO have to have it covered when I use it for modelling, but that is a small concession for still being able to model at all!.  Good luck with getting it all set up mate.

'Tis built! (Well the table, anyway) No point posting another photo yet, because after rearranging the bits in every conceivable way, I eventually built it in the same shape as the "rough mock-up" photo below . In theory I could start using it now, but first I want to make a few more bits of kit up in order to make sure that the re-organisation of the non-modelling stuff sticks, instead of it turning into a creeping pile of poo-poo (with an english accent) that eventually pushes me out of the window......

I'm in!  ;D ;D ;D

The insulation isn't done yet, but it'll come soon.

Suppose I'd better do some modelling now......

Nice place you've got now. But that kit looks a bit lonely

Looks like a proper modeling area now.  But it's way too clean.  You've got to get to work messing it up.
