Companhia Nacional de Construções Aeronauticas, Cegonha  ( Stork ) Força aérea portuguesa , Província ultramarina de Angola 1977
.

Operated as a front line supply and liason aircraft the stork had a fine and enviable reputation during the overseas conflicts that charactorised the transition from Empire to loose confederation for the Portugese.

Operated as either straightforward light freight it could also be used as an air ambulance, artillery observation, Photographic recce and even at a push armed air support.

Based upon an uprated Antonov design purchased from the Soviet Union the Stork was in low rate production for 15 years and in service from 1962 through to the 91 disaster. With units being passed onto the civil market as they slowly dwindled in Portugese service.

I would like to thank all those Portugese members for their kind comments and apologise to them for any mistakes in my poor Portugese.

AWESOME birds

Your Portuguese is perfect

In your timeline did the revolution in Portugal occurred in 1974?
Just asking because a Nationalist government buying aircraft designs from soviet union had Little chance from happening.

Did you know that Portugal, South Africa and Rhodesia started to build a common Army in the 70´s ?

Tim, what is that Stork built from?  The lines scream at me that I know what it is, but I can't come up with anything.

In the timeline the nationalist govenment was more democratic and much more free, it's major aim was to hold onto the empire as long as possible, however faced with conflicts within much of the overseas provinces it did fight to the utmost of it's ability whilst also pesuing a policy of federating the former empire as much as possible, using the British Commonwealth as an example.

Portugal is a stronger country than in OTL and a valued ally to the UK and the New Commonwealth as seen by the defence pact covering Maco and Hong Kong and the conflict with Nato-Spain in the 91 disaster ( All covered in earlier posts ).

As i really really like Portugese aircraft, markings and cammo they will apear on a regular basis in the timeline and hopefully any holes in the history will be closed as i go. ;D ;D ;D

L-39 Albatross, L'Armée de l'Air de Hati, Toussaint L'Ouverture International Airport 1991

At the time of the 91 disaster the L'Armée de l'Air de Hati possessed onlyone combat capable aircraft that being a quartet of L-39 Albatross armed trainers recently aquired from Soviet surplus stocks.

Painted in an unusual two tone grey scheme the 4 aircraft had only just been decleared operational by a pleased govenment 20 days before the start of the diaster, after then it was increasingly hard for the impovorished Hatian govenment to find spares and the technical know how to keep the planes flying and as a consiquence they flew for less than 19 months before being grounded for good.

At this time what is left of the aircraft can be seen on the edge of Toussaint L'Ouverture International Airport amongst the long grass and scrap that has collected there.

Sukhoi Su-25ubtmk, Ghanaian Air Force, Military section, Accra International Airport 1991.

Throughout the turbulant times for Ghana ( 1967 1991 ) when a sucsession of military govenments followed civillian ones with depressing inevitability one policy was adheared to by all govenments, that of not alighning with any of the power blocks which competed in the world, and so Ghana bought it's military supplies from various sources, she fielded tanks from the USSR and France, ships from the UK, aircraft from the UK, USSR and USA.

The above policy was the reason that Ghans aquired the SU25, she had recently ordered Hawk trainers from the UK and was therefore in need of a counterbalance in it's next purchase. The offer of the Su25 at a knock down price was a offer that the Air force could not refuse and the 12 +3 traines were deliverd in 1989 ( all of which had the capability to be converted to single seat attack aircraft )

this policy of Ghanas may have made it feela safer place but alas when war came in the shape of the 91 disaster she found she had few friends and she suffred at the hands of strikes from Nigerian, Sierre Leone and liberia.

Gotta love these African roundels  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
