Got to agree Tim,
I like this also, I want to have a diorama base to display some of my stuff on too.
What did you make it from if you don't mind me asking, and can you make me one??

The diorama base is excellent!

Not sure that the Stingray control centre in the back of the 2nd pic goes with the nissin hut though.... ;D

I like the board - it gives you a good piece of background to work on for your photos.

QuoteWhat did you make it from if you don't mind me asking,

to be fair it was a bit of a " make do " job, the board was a peice of foam board i had in the shed from when i used to make buildings for wargames ( wasn't any good at it so stoped, hence having the board left  ;D  ;D ) and the airfield apron sheets where images i got from the internet printed and stuck dowm, same as the carpark in the corner. The Nissan hut and the grass flock are all standard railway model products.
All in all it didn't take long to do and wasn't that hard, it took longer to put a few details upon the concrete than anything else.

I'd reccomend having a go if you want to do one as it is easier than you think and the camera hides a multitude of sins ;D

I'm pleased that people like it it will give me the inspiration to finish it off.

Lockheed F-104 Starfighter

Following the ebacle that was Portugal's attempts to hold onto it's colonies much of it's military equipment was out of date worn out or unsuitable for the job in hand.

In 1976 portugal was in need of a new interceptor to protect the metropolitan airspace of Portugal. As usual Portugal was looking towards either the UK or Brazil for it's replacement but the USA sensed an opertunity to drive a wedge no matter how small into these relationships and offered the Portugese air force 22 used F104's from surplus stocks at knock down prices.

The offer was readily accepted and luckily caused no emnety between Portugal and it's friends, the aircraft were delivered in south east asian cammo and continued to wear it throughout there career. They are known to have seen action during the 91 disaster when they intercepted US A6's over the Azores and when they were unsuccesful in trying to intercept Spanish aircraft over portugal inself.

The model represents one of the aircraft on it's delivery flight during a stop over at an RAF base for refueling.

Nice model and glad to see the apron in action!

Out of curiosity, what were the Spanish aircraft that outran (or outfought?) the Starfighters pray tell?  :o

Well mate, records are obviously a little sketchy but it appears that the aircraft involved were 4 Portugese F104 and between 6 and 8 Spanish F18's, the Portugese lost 3 aircraft the Spanish 2

Must, then, my projects bend to the iron yoke of a mechanical system? Is my soaring spirit to be chained down to the snail's pace of matter?
