Oooh that's pretty!

Presumably the dayglow colud be quickly overpainted/removed to make the aircraft "operational" in an emergency.

presuably yes mate, but for the life of me i cannot think of an emergancy in Canada that would require a Royal Ceylon Air Force aircraft to be speedily repinted.

Unless of course it was 1991 and those pessky Americans were crossing the border  ;D  ;D

I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

Going to ask the " enquiring minds " out their.........

Should an operational Royal South African Navy aircraft carrier in 1982 be called " Princess Royal " ( fits in with the Queen Elizabeth in RN service ) or the " President Kruger " or finally " Fieldmarshall Smutts " , let me know

Carrier Air Wing, HMSAS Princess Royal, May 1st 1982, River Plate, 158 miles East by South East of Montivideo.

The main misconseption of the Argentines when they attacked and siezed the Falklands was that the other nations of the New Commonwealth would not come to Britains support.

Contray to the Argentines hopes and perception Australia, South Africa and Canada all contributed Carriers with New zealand providing escorts and support ships , enabling 6 carriers to be put into the warzone.

South Africa provided the Queen Elizabeth class carrier HMSAS Princess Royal and its escorts. Using the carrier to screen the major amphibious elements of the fleet as they steamed past the wide enterance of the river Plate ( a calculated and provocotive act by the UK ) it was along with it's sister ship the HMS Queen Elizabeth involved in the only major surface engagement of the entire war.

On the first 29th April an Argentine surface action group consisting of the Vienticinco De Mayo, General Belgrano, Almirante Brown, Piedra Buena, Hercules, Santisima Trinidad nad the Py was detected leaving port by the Churchill Class submarine Hms Conqueror, which following orders, shadowed the group and relayed it's position to London which co-ordinated a strike with two of the available carriers and RAF Concorde bomber units based within South africa ( see earlier parts of the thread for the concorde B4 ) as well as the conqueror herself.

As the sun rose on the 1st of may a strike of Bucanners escortrd by Phantoms left the Princess Royal with the express purpose of taking down the radar coverage of the group using the improved version of the Martel missile carried by the Bucanners, another strike of Bucanners and phantoms was tasked with exploiting this situation and attacking the Naval forces directly.

during the action the South African navy claimed the destruction of the Almirante Brown and the Hercules with damage done to the radars on the General Belgrano ( Dispatched by the Conqueror ) , Veinticinco De Mayo ( dispatched by airborne missile from RAF Concordes ) , and the Santisima Trinidad ( dispatched by Royal Navy air strike 0 for the loss of 3 bucaneers and 1 Phantom.

During the rest of the conflict the princess royal saw no other significant action being deploye doing routine patrols and anti submarine sweeps until the end of the war.
