I've thought of building an "armoured engine" based on one of those Revell train kits

If he ever gets around to doing US locomotives, I'd love to suggest a GG1 in Southern Pacific markings.  Either a GG1 or some of the Great Northern's big electric locomotives; either would've been a good alternative to cab-forward steam engines for the long tunnels (actually, that's *why* Great Northern used electric locomotives, they had their own long tunnels).

Aren't some of the early diesel electrics considered to be 'streamliners' stylistically?    Whiff'd locomotives are a great idea!!!!

Yes indeedy, particularly the "unit-trains".
Raymond Loewy devoted the second half of his 1937 book Locomotive to the diesel-electrics.

The Loewy book is a very interesting period piece for design enthusiasts and was the second volume in a series called The New Vision.
The first was Aircraft by the architect Le Corbusier.

What about whiffing the technical bits? Changing a diesel-electric to full electric (or vv.), swap bogies (BB to CC) or add a third bogie in the middle, vary the length, change a diesel generator to a gas turbine or nuclear powerplant...
The possibilities are endless.

Model rail magazine has run a few 'counter factual' models over the years - e.g. Deltics in GNER livery etc.

I have the shell of a Hornby BoB class that will be in Rail blue with yellow ends when I get round to it.
