What if you could make I.M. Styrene aftermarket parts? What would they be?

Here's a what-if for this misty, grey, generally rotten Labor Day:

Lets say for a moment all of us are expert CAD designers and have access to making high quality moulds for the hobby industry.   Additionally, it wouldn't be our main source of income so financially breaking even or even losing a little cash is acceptable.  Rather than using PE Brass, resins, or making decals, all parts are the styrene plastic Tamiya uses.

What would you make?   The 2 categories:  fun only and (optional) funds only.


I'd make an extended upper wing for the Eduard Albatros D.V in both scales to make a parasol machine as a piece just for fun.   For income, I'd make a set of i.m. styrene flaps, a better prop/spinner, and exhausts for the Tamiya Mustang, also in both scales.

I'd make weapons sets.  Accurate, complete weapons sets in 1/48, 1/72 AND 1/144.  I'd package them by era, role, and users, for example, "Modern US Air to Air", "Cold War RAF Air to Ground" etc.  The air to ground sets would include the full range from rocket pods to sunshine bombs.

How about a WhiffWorks series? All the generic bits that you end up buying hundred of kits just to get the right ones of : wheels, u/c struts, nosecoses, jet engine nozzles, decent seats, props etc, all in a range of sizes.....

Modern ground support equipment, the Airfix WW2 Airfield sets sold great over the years so post war and modern equivilants would go down well.

Wouldn't mind seeing a Vulcan and Victor Bomb bay set complete with conventional and target marker bombs, with a 2nd set for Blue Steel including handling truck, and loading trolley.

Probably updated cockpit and intake/ducting internals for the Lindbergh / Aurora?  XFY-1 Pogo, and the XFV-1 Salmon (if the latter ever turns up again)  And plastic bits to crank up the Lindbergh XF11,  XF-88 and  XFU8.1  kits into what those respective types would look like if they had entered service in their original guises.   That and a YF-93 conversion nose for  1/48th   F-86 kits.

Yeah, and how about pilots with a bit of character: WWI types with 'taches and big scarves, desert ones in shorts an short sleeved shirts, female jet pilots etc....

An interior detail set, with lots of whiffy options, for the 1/32nd Glencoe (ex ITC) McDonnell XV-1

An upgrade kit for the Airfix Bristol Belvedere: Westland-type wings, u/c, fuel probe and forward intake so you can actually build an operational one rather than just a prototype, multipart clear-and-solid nose so that you don't have to guess the canopy frames and have a joint line across what's supposed to be a single glazing, and a cabin interior, so you can actually see something through the big hatch......

Not that I'm biased, you understand......

Yeah, as BlackOps said.....pilots/aircrew. From every era, in all scales. I don't know about you, but I buy models, just for the pilots, to finish off the one I'm working on.

Well I'm with Mr Driver. Armament sets but WWI through WWII including all the necessary racks and fitments. Again boxed by Nationality and period.


Lee's set actually sounds as though it could be commercially viable if one of the "Limited Injection moulding" boys packaged it with say the Airfix Mossie ?

I'm in agreement with AD and Chris. Complete armament sets. All types and all era's. Also I thnk I would do a set of drop tanks as well, seeing as they are an important source of parts/kit bashes etc.

Id do a 1/72 TSR-2 kit. After that, i would do one in 1/48 and 1/144. Oh, and it would be affordable

I'd fill in the missing years of USN carrier aircraft in both 1/540 (for the ubiquitous Revell Forrestal and Lindberg Essex) and 1/700 (for the many carriers in 1/700). The carriers don't include enough aircraft to do a proper deck park, and there are many aircraft that are simply not available.
