Whiffing Cliches

As far as the usual modeler goes, we're an off the wall bunch, but when we get together we tend to come up with a lot of the same ideas.  When someone calls out for an idea, we often come up with the same old stuff.  We also tend to avoid the same stuff.  So what are the old whiff cliches?

I can think of a few off the top of my head:

Israeli camo
Raspberry Ripple
Sweedish splinter cam
Floatplane
"I hate F-16/F-18/F-22/F-35's" etc.

Any more???

Well I've not been here long enough to notice long-term trends, but I have noticed a tendency to demand a version of just about EVERYTHING in South African cammo....... Mind you, I get the impression that the Canadian contingent have already Maple-Leafed themselves 'til they're stuffed, and the Brits regard painting everything in RAF colours as just normal, so maybe it's a nationalistic thing, though having said that, where are all the Finnish members then?

A big chunk of them are under 2 cathegories
Nationalistic cliches (probably more than a half of cliches)
and cool schemes: Sweden, Israel, South Africa, Finland, Japan, ... just appied nice colours to their aircrafts
US SEA camo too

It seems like whifs seem to come in many "flavors".

The simplest whif seems to be an OOB subject with alternative markings of an (example) aircraft that was NOT used by the country marked on the aircraft. (e.g.--a South African Me-262). Or, an alternative marking scheme for an aircraft that WAS used, but just not where and by whom it was modeled (e.g. Italian desert-camo Me-262)

Then there are whifs of projects either partially undertaken or just drawing-board that "come to life" (e.g. a Ta-183 jet).

Then there are "extrapolations" of known aircraft (e.g. my "Jinpu-Kai) with or without fictitious markings.

Then there are some out-and-out "inventions" that are only mildly wild and well could-have-been.

Then there are out-and-out FABRICATIONS of who-knows-what, OUTRAGEOUS, implausible what-ifs that are just imaginative and entertaining!!

It's all good!

You are right about zwillings. But I did not mention Spats because it is not cliche, it is a proven fact ...

There's definately a tendancey to build something of your own nationality, but I'd say that's something that's common with modelling in general.  A lot of the RAF thing with the Brit contingent is mainly down to the theme at this years SMW, it'll calm down a bit after Telford.  You might actually see a plethora of aircraft in another nations colours next year.

I think things like spats, T-tails & such are individuals preferences that sometime inspire others but don't  come down to cliches?  I know they get mentioned a lot, but that's often just a bit tongue in cheek?

I don't know if this qualifies as a cliche, but every time someone here or elsewhere posts something truly innovative or out-there, there is a chorus of either "Wish I'd thought of that!" or "You know, I sketched something like that, or have a part-started kit-bash or..." and suddenly there are all these clone projects.

I can add two more: jet powering piston aircraft, and naval versions of land based ones.

With me it's mostly a case of thinking I've had a cool idea, only to float it and then have someone post a link to an identical model from three years ago......
