Box Inflation

The point about big boxes and empty space might explain the Hobbyboss trick of having a moulded plastic holder for the sprues and main components. It looks better than opening a huge Revell Lightning kit to find the actual sprue takes just a third.

In the paper last week an MP has written a report on how the push for children to join organised activities for all their spare time can lead them to be less capable at managing their own lives as adults. When everything is arranged for people they can't learn how to do things for themselves. Same goes for modelmaking.

On the other hand, judging by the size of the carrier on the box painting, they should have been able to fit about 6 Westland Whirlwind HAS mk.22's into one Airfix box of said helo....;-)

Holy thread revival Boxman!

In a glaring example of box inflation, I just managed to get FOUR Airfix Fouga Magisters in ONE of the recent re-issue boxes.

Have you ever compared the size of box that early renditions of the Airfix Halifax came in with the current box?  Some inflation.

Have you ever compared the size of box that early renditions of the Airfix Halifax came in with the Revel Halifax III box?  Hyperinflation.

Yes I know they are different kits, but hey, that's a big box!

Yup with a lot of parts.

I have two lines of thought regarding box size inflation. The first is that they just have a series of standard boxes and that is it. The Revell approach ? And I wish that they'd get top opening boxes I just abhor those end openers  :banghead:

The second is that as moulding technology has improved then sprues have got larger, thus so have boxes. The companies then use 1 above to put older kits, with smaller sprues and fewer parts in to the new larger boxes ?

Am I over thinking this ? Do I have to much time on my hands ?  ;D

I think Airfix have a policy that each series has a certain minimum box size, so if the Magister is going to be Series 3, it has to go in a Series 3 box or bigger.

Quite how an old-tool Magister ends up Series 3 while a new-tool Gnat ends up Series 1 is a whole other question, of course. The sprues, instructions and decal sheets are all the same size, yet the Gnat is two series down, with a box to match....

Calm down Chris, it's a JET!  ;D

Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

Ah right - Fougia not Miles. I did look in the catalogue at the back of the Airfix Annual but it wasn't listed

You could argue and latter this afternoon I might  that the turbine blades and all the other whirly things inside a turbojet are propellers of one form or another
